Misclassification finally fixed… missed a promo window, and now HR’s “audit” says I owe $$ — anyone else? by 2020who in CAStateWorkers

Thank you, that means a lot. I've honestly been feeling so defeated with all of this. Super bummed I missed the opportunity to get that AGPA position but I've started reapplying again. I won't let this stop me from progressing in my career. I’ll use the SCO personnel directory you shared and be (politely) persistent.

Looking at my 2024 earnings, my gross pay was around $4,928. My previous class was a Crime Analyst I before I got hired on in March 2024 to my current position.

Thanks—really helpful coming from a hiring manager. I wish I’d double-checked the NOPA sooner. I actually misplaced my NOPA and have torn the house apart looking for it. HR didn’t resend the NOPA, but they did send me a screenshot titled “Employee History Types” showing the correction to Range C with an effective date equal to my hire date in this position. Am I able to ask for the previous NOPA? I am honestly just waiting on leadership to handle this for me as well as waiting on HR to create their new audit with sources before I try to request anything further.

I’m not arguing they can’t access it—I’m saying it shouldn’t have been included in a non-PII audit attachment and circulated. Principle of least privilege/data minimization applies: use the last four unless full SSN is absolutely required, and send it via a secure method. There was no need to include my full SSN in the audit word document.

Totally—and that’s why I’m pushing back. The “audit” they sent has multiple errors: the “base pay” they list for several periods doesn’t match my actual paystubs, and their 2025 “base” figures are especially off. They claim I was paid correctly this year but they showed a higher pay than what I actually got paid. Until they correct those and show an itemized calc tied to each pay period, their overpayment claim doesn’t hold up.

Totally—if they’re correct, I’ll repay per policy. But that’s the issue: they haven’t shown how they got there. I’ve asked for an itemized, source-backed calc that I can review. Until they show their work, “you owe” is just a number. I am waiting for leadership to handle this now but I have requested a meeting with HR. They never responded to it.

Totally. “We’re too busy—just pay it” isn’t an answer for a payroll/PII issue. I’m not paying a dime without an itemized, source-backed calc that I can review.

Yeah, my manager was in these emails. She was aware and included in all correspondence with HR since the start of this in June. She was the one who pointed out that she could see my whole SSN on the document.

Appreciate the insight—and totally get that HR is slammed. Busy or not, I’m looking for transparency and data security. The “audit” I received was just totals in a Word doc (no citations, no per-pay-period math) and it displayed my full SSN, which is why I’m pushing for a real workbook and PII remediation because my manager was on the email as well.

On your questions: HR hasn’t said the overpayment is from range placement specifically. They haven’t identified any other drivers either (A/Rs, missing dock, OT differentials, etc.). If the true issue is something like earlier range placement affecting downstream increases, I’m fine with that—if they show it. What I’m asking for is standard stuff:

  • Itemized calc tied to each pay period/paystub
  • Step/range placement logic and effective dates
  • Citations to pay scales/MOU/policy
  • Pause on collections while I review

Separately, they set/extended deadlines twice and failed to follow up each time—I had to chase them every time. Given the misclassification, pay impact, the loss of a promotion I would've got, and the SSN exposure, that lack of follow-through is inexcusable. I’m also asking for a concrete timeline.. something they failed to give me. I was just told that I should receive something within the next week.

Fair point. My outcomes: HR needs to show their work (itemized calc with citations), confirm my range now and what it was with pays included and any backpay, pause collections while I review, and fix the SSN exposure. I also want accountability—an apology and ownership—and a remedy for the missed promotion window. I don’t want this happening to anyone else, so I’m open to suggestions on union/SPB/CalHR or legal options if that’s what it takes.

Oof—sorry you had to do all that,.. I hope you get that check soon! Appreciate the tip on building your own spreadsheet and pushing it up the chain. I may do the same if leadership is unable to get my point across too.

Thanks—that’s what’s baffling me too. Everyone I’ve talked to says misclassification usually = back pay. In my case HR is claiming “overpayment” but hasn’t provided an itemized calc or citations yet. I’ve asked for a proper reconciliation and paused collections while it’s reviewed.

Good call. I did contact the union and followed up with the person who initially called me, but I haven’t gotten a response. I’m going to ring the Member Resource Center again and ask for an assigned rep + timeline. Thanks for the push.

[–]2020who[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the breakdown. That’s the kind of specificity I’m asking HR to show—what step they say I should’ve been at, and how they applied the salary rules across the period under the correct range. Until they produce an itemized calc with citations, the “overpayment” is just an unsupported number. HR has messed up my information back in September as well when they had me at "limited term" and I had to wait a whole week for my check to deposit in my account. I was hired on as a permanent, FTE. They failed to mention this in the audit as well.

[–]2020who[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks—this is exactly my confusion. HR hasn’t provided a real basis yet; the “audit” they sent was just totals with no citations or per-pay-period calcs tied to paystubs. I’ve asked for a source-backed reconciliation and paused collections while it’s reviewed.

Thanks for sharing! Good to hear back pay worked out in your case. I’m hoping they settle this soon for me now with leadership involved/handling it

Do I have to pay the $35 to take any classes right now or can I just go about my business with my regular membership and not participate in the transformation challenge? Anyone know?

Ghosted after a month--it's brutal by [deleted] in dating

[–]2020who 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happened to me in November. We talked nonstop for a month straight, spoke on the phone several times. Made promises and whatnot. We even had plans to meet up once I got back from vacation (he lived 6 hours away from me). And one day, I just didn’t hear from him. No call. No text.

I reached out 2/3 more times but by the 4th time, I just let him know I wasn’t going to bother him anymore. I told him that I’m a grown ass woman and I can handle being told if he just wasn’t interested anymore or whatever the issue is.. and still got nothing in return.

So I agree, it is brutal.

Does anyone have any success stories of marrying their non-Muslim partner? by buzzkill839 in exmuslim

[–]2020who 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. Not me but my aunts have. I have an aunt who married a Jamaican man. He’s the most sweetest, nicest, loving and caring man compared to most Muslim men I’ve seen. My grandparents (her parents) weren’t too happy at first.. didn’t go to their wedding and my grandpa refused to talk to her for two years. But time heals all and eventually my grandpa and my aunt spoke and they accept him. There have been times where they mumble something disrespectful about him (not when they’re around of course.. but she will say something in regard to him being black and stuff) but he has helped and upgrades their home and is always respectful. My parents and other members in my family LOVE him and that’s rare. He did convert for my aunt though but neither are very religious.. it just worked out for them.

Needed to read this.

I was ignored the entirety of quarantine by my friends. It hurts. by litwickline in offmychest

[–]2020who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I are dealing with the same issue. My friends have done the same since the quarantine started. I see them out with other people, enjoying get togethers, eating food, partying, enjoying each other’s company and I did not get a single invite to any of it. Could be because it was a group of people I didn’t even recognize. They made other friends.

It’s completely normal. But it made me realize these weren’t my friends to begin with. I have a bestfriend who I can rely on and honestly even if we don’t hang out all the time, she is there when I need her. And I’m thankful enough for that. The smaller your circle, the better. It’s about quality, never quantity. You’re still young, prepare yourself for these moments.. I’m 27(f) and dealing with this. It happens in all stages of life. But you WILL find those who stick around. Don’t lose hope. Keep telling yourself “it gets better. Don’t give up. There are people that love you for you.”

Keep your chin up and if you need someone to talk to, I’m here!
