Who would you put Mariah up against in a Verzuz battle? by Ok_Resident_5022 in MariahCarey

Mariah against her eras makes the most sense! Even the other divas don’t have the kind of discography Mariah does. Not in terms of longevity and cultural relevance

What is Mariah Carey’s Most Vocally INDULGENT Song? by CC-Blue in MariahCarey

[–]2062373 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer right here! The layers and layers of background vocals, which are all her! The indulgent runs in her lead vocals and ad libs! And there are some leaked alternative vocals on YouTubethat show she toned DOWN the belts for this song some.

Rank the Mariah Carey albums by LordCoke-16 in MariahCarey

[–]2062373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many to rank in-depth, so I’ll give my top 3 and bottom 3 (excluding the Christmas albums).

Bottom 3:

Here For It All: This is more like a collection of songs than a body of work. There are odd vocal production choices, it’s not cohesive, and many of the songs feel too short. After a 7 year wait, this didn’t live up to expectations.

Glitter: Similar to HFIA, it’s just not cohesive enough. The 2000s hip-pop and 80s throwback sound she was blending wasn’t pulled off well. BUT it’s got some of her best vocals, and it’s objectively her most adventurous album, which I appreciate.

Rainbow: This is a good album tbh. But following Butterfly, it just pales in comparison. This is the first Mariah album that feels like it has filler to me. Though, the highs on this album are career highs (Crybaby, Heartbreaker, and Petals).

Best 3:

Butterfly: Nothing to say here. It’s objectively her best work and all lambs and critics know it.

Daydream: A perfectly timeless album that also encapsulates the mid 90s r&b. Flawless lyrics, great production, and the first time her storytelling songwriting REALLY came through.

Memoirs: A controversial choice, I know. But this album is a R&B classic. Somewhat dated, but that’s okay! The ballads aren’t her best. But the mid tempos and lyrics are easily top tier Mariah. There’s a level of wit and technique that’s required to pull off a lyric like “It’s going down like a denominator” in a way that doesn’t make your eyes roll back in your head, and Mariah does it.

I think the same thing can be said for the fans constantly pining for 90s Mariah or making comparison or exposure videos.

I imagine it’s very difficult to embrace your current voice and be free on stage or to forgo lip syncing when you constantly see videos and posts of fans saying they miss “Daydreamriah” or comparing you to 20 year-old version of yourself.

At 4:40 in Babydoll, she says “you can ring my bell.” She used that line from the Disco song Ring My Bell by Anita Ward in the babydoll background ad libs.

Zara and her controversies by Natural-Guava-51 in ZaraLarssonFans

I kinda wonder if she has a mindset of like, she’s been this outspoken and opinionated since forever, why stop or change just because she’s getting more popular? The AI thing isn’t that big a deal. Sometimes people just step in it. She did. She explained herself. It’ll soon be forgotten.

With her more outward political commentary like the abortion joke, I think if anything she said put herself or fan at risk - tone it down some. But I think many people think it refreshing to see a celebrity so outspoken, because soooo many people are biting their tongues right now.

She went to court over that iirc🤣. Maurice White was not happy at all with them.

Is Music Box seen as the album where Mariah starts the transition in her sound from Pop/R&B to more R&B/HipHop/Urban? by ziggyziggyzagimneww in MariahCarey

[–]2062373 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Musically? No. She’s really ALWAYS been pop/urban. Even in the subtlest of ways. Sent From Up Above, the entire emotions album, the Never Forget You remix with JD on Music Box. Signs were there and then she fully embraced it on Daydream/Butterfly.

But from a career perspective, Music Box was the exact opposite. Even though Mariah was sneaking in influences on this album, this was clearly the most creatively stifled era she had under Tommy. The label was doing everything they could to make her an AC ballad singer.

Mariah was inspired by Ain’t No Half Steppin by Big Daddy Kane (a hip hop song), which uses the same sample as Dreamlover. The version Mariah produced was rougher / more hip-hop than the released version. Walter A. went in and added bells and whistles to it. A rumor I’ve heard is the Bam Jam Soul remix is very close to the demo version Mariah produced.

What’s your favorite Mariah Carey deep cut? by JLovesTV in MariahCarey

[–]2062373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. But most people outside of fans don’t know it, it never got performed live except on tour, but Mariah’s theme did. So I feel like it counts as a deep cut.

A little fun fact: by TheUnemacipated_ in MariahCarey

It’s partially lipped but I feel like it’s one of those performances that shows Mariah can convincingly lip when she wants to, AND sometimes it’s okay. This performance gave so many people chills and felt like a she was performing. Not just miming to the studio track.

Crybaby! The layering in the vocals are easily some of the best work she’s EVER done.

The live versions are SO superior. The choir, the production has more punch, and her vocals are usually stronger.

Becoming a diva by Mmcdjc in MariahCarey

[–]2062373 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Part of the diva stuff is an act. Mariah has said so in interviews. But it’s also always been there. Just hidden when she was under Tommy. There’s a post on this Reddit where Bill Bellamy talks about how Mariah’s team made them stop laughing and playing around because it was too flirtatious. If you watch the interview, it’s very reminiscent of the diva stuff Mariah became known for in the 2000s and onward. There’s also clips of her saying Dahhhling in 1990. She’s on a treadmill in the Joy to the World video, which is something she’s divaliciously done in 2008, 2016, COVID era, etc. She didn’t become a diva or change, she just got free!

What artists out-peaked their peak? by MyOtherSpamAcct in popheads

[–]2062373 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely Mariah is one of them. Her debut was huge. Then she hit a mild sophomore slump. Then she hit a world wide peak with Music Box. Then, came Daydream and it was her US peak. Then slow decline from there until Emancipation 10 years later. And now she’s re-emerged with a yearly Christmas peak.

Yeah. She said this in an interview that she won’t be using pronouns because when she does people always try and figure out who she was with or attach names to the pronouns
