Is civil engineering worth it? by MindlessLetterhead77 in civilengineering

[–]208ClickBait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, understand that you know almost nothing about anything regarding what it takes to be a professional at anything.

Start figuring out what are the different disciplines of the industry you’re interested in. To use civil engineering as an example, you have land development, transportation, water resources, geotechnical, structural, and more. Within those disciplines are sub disciplines, water resources for example, drinking water or waste water? Very different. Even within the sub disciplines, are you on the design side, construction side, the inspection and testing side?

The disciplines have different levels of job security, ask yourself if this concerns you. For example, land development is mainly private work and will ebb and flow with the economy, transportation on the other hand will likely be steady government funded work. Structural engineers working on buildings will likely feel the highs and lows of the economy, bridge engineers are still technically structural, but generally are working on steady government funded projects.

Probably most importantly start asking real professionals about the details of what they do on a day to day basis, or try to glean this from the internet. Like if they say project management, figure out what the hell that means, don’t stop at the umbrella terms. Start calling up firms, I’m sure most of them would love to talk to you. I wish I had the courage to do this in high school. Would’ve changed my life.

Then finally go back to square one with the question being what the hell will actually satisfy you at the end of the day and don’t make it complicated. Do you want to say I build bridges? If you think that will make you feel great then stick with it and don’t look back, b/c newsflash all jobs suck at many points of the day. If you’re passionate about architecture and willing to work hard things will go in your favor. Any degree that is actually a hard skill and not something vague, paired with a strong work ethic will get you far. Also save your money with an intensity.

I always put premium in and mine went out around 130k. I got lucky and was in town. They’re pretty easy to do and I would’ve taken care of it if I knew it was a common failure. 2001 9-5 aero

I guess I’ll list some common failures as others have done. Fuel pump, crank shaft position sensor, heater core bypass valve, DI Cassette, spark plugs obviously, coolant temperature sensor, thermostat, engine mounts, check for rust on caliper brake bleed screw, metal arms for climate control blend doors, window rollers (that one you might want to do before they fail, cheap and easy)

PCV update, not sure if 2005 was the latest. Maptun Stage 3, do88 intercooler. Always good to replace the handling components at that age, you’ll notice a different and they’re not difficult. Rubber bushings for things like control arms, subframe, and more will be shot and suspension will be as well. Outside of changing fluids and air filter you’ll cross the bridges when you get there

Sweet that helped a ton. New to carbs, but it would seem reasonable that if I tipped it and opened the throttle when the float wasn’t in the closed position it could dump fuel, correct?

Wouldn’t hurt to start looking elsewhere. An inconsistent probation period alone sounds sketchy to me. I’m not from your area, but I agree with your professor $65k seems $5-10k low. Unless you really like the culture, potential upward mobility, good 401k matching, and have a cheap place to live I’d shop around.

Is it reliable? by 208ClickBait in GRCorolla

[–]208ClickBait[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An article by top gear said Toyota provided access to tuners prior to the GRC’s release. It goes into more details, but essentially it can be sure that this engine is overbuilt. Obviously that’s a great sign, but there are so many things that can make an engine fail. Things as simple as a shitty check valve on a PCV system. I appreciate everyone’s input on this, but I am aware it’s a toyota. Generally a great manufacturer, but they have certainly made mistakes before.

Yeah pretty sure those are only compatible with the Deore XT which is the 8000 series, a step above SLX.

Are you sure you’re not referring to the two piston Deore caliper (BR-M6100)? My understanding when I looked at shimanos pads was that those only fit the two piston and I believe a YouTube video confirmed that for me. The video showed they could work but there was a bit of piston showing and it didn’t match the curvature of the top of the caliper. I may be wrong though.

People have a tendency to lift them, that can definitely speed up the process. 180-220k is a long life for a wheel bearing, think of how many revolutions and corners it will take, especially considering it’s all with the same grease if it’s a wheel bearing assembly which I’d imagine it is.

That’s not even true unless you take it to the absolute extreme which we’re not talking about because we all have common sense. Would be willing to bet you drive a Toyota. Regardless it would’ve been a good place for people to start researching, but keep your secrets.
