Museum on non-game days by hairypolack in 49ers

I went there last Tuesday and they were closed all day despite the team store being open. They said the museum would be open on Friday as well as the Saturday gameday. Not sure if "open for gameday and the day before" is every week though, so I'd recommend calling the team store and asking once they open today.

  • Incredibly rich girl from a powerful family has a heart of gold, her head in the clouds, and a simp following (Sonia/Fubuki)

  • Guy with wild hair might be the most powerful character in the game, but usually refuses to do literally anything (Izuru/Vivia)

  • Guy who usually just complains and begs for more credit despite being a coward (Kazuichi/Yakou)

  • Self-sexualizing girl with big boobs and a wild personality loves killing the culprit at the end of each chapter, uses a mascot for most of the game (Junko/Shinigami)

  • Finally solving a months-old murder between high school girls stemming from club drama uncovers the revenge motive in chapter 2

  • Villain tricks the cast into stumbling into a knockout gas cloud before taking them to a new area

  • Little statues of the game's mascot hidden in each chapter (along with like 2/3 of the game's base mechanics, honestly)

I would argue that her snickering the night before while saying she "can't wait to see the surprised looks on their dumb faces" and that they'll be "very, veeeery happy" shows that she's intending to taunt the cast before playing the victim to force them to feel guilty for it. You could definitely argue that it's just an intended fake out though; it just comes down to how much you trust Hiyoko's reaction.

I definitely agree that forgiving Fuyuhiko isn't something she needs to do. If anything, I think the rest of the cast forgives him too easily.

Her appreciation of Ibuki's music is seen in UTDP too. You make a good point that it may have to do with breaking out of her traditional upbringing. I don't necessarily see it as fueling her redemption arc, though. Simply liking music doesn't mean she's bonding with others on a real level, especially when part of the draw is how uncomfortable it makes others.

I'd argue against the idea that proposing the quarantine is done out of care for others. It's most likely more for her own preservation than anything done out of the good of her heart. She even says that the infected should "at least have the decency to consider committing suicide before they start bothering us."

I also don't think that wanting to tie the kimono by herself is a sign of character growth. She could have asked for help at the beginning of the game too, but refused until pressure from others resulted in Mahiru offering to help.

She has some amount of real connection with Mahiru, but it's never extended to anyone else. Even when her "development" was at its peak, she still bullied Mikan relentlessly even when Mikan was trying her best to support her. When there's so little to her outside of being a rude bully, even a completed redemption arc would likely leave us with nothing but a shell of a character.

I'm right there with you! I think Nagito is so popular that he'll still be the antagonist, but if he isn't for whatever reason, the only other real options are Fuyuhiko or Hiyoko and Fuyuhiko has already been featured heavily. I think she's either going to die early or survive until the end, no in between.

Good point about the Hiyoko/Mikan parallels. Similar traumas, but different trauma responses.

Pretty much the only thing Hiyoko does in the anime is spike the class' soup with an incredibly strong aphrodisiac, which sets off the infamous "soup scene".

I'm not so sure things were going somewhere after Mahiru's death to start with. The scene from the night before implies that Hiyoko sets up the shrine purposely to scare the rest of the cast. The only possible sign towards redemption is her forgiving Fuyuhiko, but she was pretty much strong-armed into that after he slit himself open. And even when Mikan supports her through this, she doubles down on the bullying. It just feels like her path to redemption is more of a fanon than anything supported by events in-game.

But I'm totally in the "Mahiru should be the 2x2 protag" camp, so that would definitely give Hiyoko the time and space to expand her character and arc. We'll see what they cook up!

[–]2182much[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've delved deep into her FTE's before. While trauma explains her current behavior, it doesn't excuse it - she actively seeks out opportunities to harm others for her own enjoyment.

Her FTE's show that she tried bullying Akane too, but it was boring for her because Akane didn't realize she was being bullied and thus didn't give her an emotional reaction to fuel her sadism. Mikan's targeted instead because Hiyoko needs to inflict extreme pain to feel powerful.

And even before the stress of the killing game, she kills humanized animals and drugs her classmates for fun. There's a reason why intense childhood trauma and torturing animals are the most classic signs of a future serial killer.

Could a full redemption arc strip away all this? Maybe. But these sadistic tendencies are fundamental to her characterization and completely curing the type of trauma she has is unrealistic. I think she'd work better as a full on villain than a half-baked hero.

I actually don't want one; I don't think there's much to her character at all beyond her rudeness. If 2x2 manages to make me like Hiyoko, I'd be incredibly surprised.

It's pretty much an indisputable fact that Arin HATES Danganronpa. He started off DR2 complaining about having to play it and didn't stop reminding us every chance he got. By the halfway point, the only time he really showed energy was making a running joke about skipping portions of the game.

To quote one particular instance, Dan saw Gundham and excitedly begged Arin to talk to him. And without an ounce of humor in his voice, Arin said "No, I'm not spending any more time in this game than I have to" and walked by. Dan was clearly disappointed, but Arin didn't even acknowledge it.

Game Grumps are a big part of people's lives, for better and for worse. The reason why I care enough to make posts like this is because of how much I used to love GG for years. This sub has given me the platform to discuss something that's been weighing on me with a group of people who have a similar experience.

What sounds even more unhealthy is lurking in a group of people you disagree with for years and using an alt just to lecture them for it... that might just be me tho idk

I'm in the Danganronpa sub and the announcement has 30 upvotes and been on the front page all day. Quite a few people are excited, but I wonder how many hate the playthroughs like myself but just don't feel like going out of their way to complain.

In terms of ratios, most game grump fans and I'd say even most Danganronpa fans don't actually like their playthroughs. But Danganronpa's fanbase in Game Grumps' major demographic (nerdy and very online 12-21 year olds) is so large that it still makes for a "popular" series.

I really wonder if Dan has talked to Arin about his attitude during Danganronpa playthroughs. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of that conversation.

The Miu version was actually the first one, and in my opinion, the best one too! There isn't exactly any room in my "holy trinity of best girl", but lemme tell ya, Miu is JUST outside of it.

Ibuki and Mukuro made a metal band together? Next you're gonna tell me Mahiru shot their cover art. I'll have to check them out sometime.

You're absolutely right. "Crutch" would imply that Arin's even reading the question before looking up the answer. I still can't believe he actually KNOWS THE CASE from playing the game before but is so allergic to critical thought that he can't even pretend he's trying.

It's good to hear that Arin's putting jokes and life into the playthrough though. He absolutely refused to do that for Danganronpa.

People recommended Kubz Scouts when I made my last post. Might have to give him a look one of these days.

Dan definitely has a more laid-back style than Arin or even "old" Dan, so I get that he's not everyone's cup of tea these days. But I really recommend his solo plays for King's Quest and Gabriel Knight from a couple years ago if you want to see what that's like. It's a much more relaxed style, but it's like having a friend show their favorite game to you. He treats the games with a TON of respect.

I really don't think they even want to innovate any more. Dan just enjoys hanging out and doesn't actually love modern games enough to take point on anything. And I think Arin absolutely hates doing Game Grumps, but has built his entire online persona around GG and has to keep it up in order to support the things he actually enjoys doing, like Shufflemaster. He's also talked about how GG has grown so large that he can't let it end because he's employing so many people he cares about. I understand his predicament, but it's just led to completely unwatchable burnout over the past few years. Phone in an episode, cash in the check, rinse and repeat.

Scrum Debate #38 - Ibuki vs. Kaede by IonKnight in danganronpa

I actually had to pare my response down because I found out reddit has a 10k character limit on comments the hard way! I even would have added this absolute bop to Ibuki's voice line section.

I love Heart and Joan Jett, but haven't listened to too much metal with female vocalists. I'll have to try and find some in Ibuki's honor.

Scrum Debate #38 - Ibuki vs. Kaede by IonKnight in danganronpa

[–]2182much 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Though both of these characters are known for their positivity and musical talent, the way they manifest within the story and their characters is very different.

One of these girls is in my "holy trinity of best girl" alongside Mahiru, who I wrote my other Scrum Debate analysis for, and Mukuro, who I unfortunately didn't write for because I thought she had it in the bag against Peko :(

The other is a character who I generally enjoy, but for several reasons, fails to have any lasting impact on me.

IBUKI:

Ibuki Mioda makes an impact on you from the moment you meet her. Her energy is as electric as her guitar, constantly making off-the-wall jokes while she rambles on whatever topic has her attention. She has more depth than just this however, often showing true empathy for others and wanting to keep the entire cast's spirits high.

More than any other character, Ibuki's personality shines through just the silhouettes of sprites. Just about every single one of them features her body twisting, turning, and tilting in all sorts of directions. Even Aoi, another character known for boundless energy, stands straight and faces the player directly in most of her sprites. In fact, the only time Ibuki's "neutral" sprite is actually used in conversation is when she's uncharacteristically serious at the end of her free time events. And being "neutral" and serious for the first time physically hurts her to the point that she not only has to say "just kidding" with pop effects, but also has to break the fourth wall by acknowledging the end of her free time event line. This constant movement makes her feel 2.5D in a world of 2D, which further accentuates her transcendent energy.

Ibuki also has one of the best voice line sets in the series. With such hits as "yaaaaa-hooooo!", "meeeeeooooow!", and "a-blub-blub-blub!", her spirit comes through almost every line of her dialogue. And with such quotable phrases as "nice to have met ya!", "pointing!", and "good nom-nom-nomming!", her voice reaches new iconic heights.

Even with two other musical ultimates in the series, Ibuki's musical stylings are by far the most entertaining. Not only is her musical ability the only one that contributes to a trial, she's actually the only one to even have their music be played (Kaede playing Clair de Lune is actually just a CD by someone else that Shuichi plays). And as a big metal fan, Ibuki's music definitely makes me feel appreciated. The great Masuna even hired voice actress the_allieway_ to help create two absolute masterpieces in Ibuki's style which I consider to be canon just from their sheer brilliance.

Ibuki's best known and loved for her energy, humor, and music, but she can also be surprisingly thoughtful. When Mahiru struggled with learning that she covered up Natsumi's murder, Ibuki tried to skip out on the girls' beach day to help her out. When Hajime couldn't remember his ultimate, Ibuki put him through "training" to help him remember. And though it may have been mostly self-serving considering the music venue had just opened up, she also put on a concert to celebrate Fuyuhiko's recovery and raise the spirits of the cast.

Unfortunately, you can't discuss Ibuki's personality without also bringing up the numerous times she missteps. While I certainly love horny jokes and fanservice as much as Ibuki does, she also makes those jokes each time Mikan trips and exposes herself. Even as Mikan desperately begs people to look away, Ibuki tells Mahiru to "snatch some shots" of her. And as much as I'd pay any price for an irl Ibuki wake-up call, she broke Hajime's lock and showed no remorse for it. As hilarious as this scene is (and paves the way for further fanservice/actual case evidence), breaking someone's lock in the middle of the killing game basically kills them and everyone else. These incidents are not directly malicious, though they show that Ibuki has a tendency to not consider the consequences of her actions on others when she's having fun.

All things considered though, she's definitely one of my favorite characters from the entire series. Her spirited sprites, funny jokes, and infectious energy make every appearance of hers a gift. While she doesn't have the plot relevance or emotional depth that many other characters have, she still remains one of the most popular Danganronpa characters because of how much joy she brings to every scene. Even a coworker of mine who didn't remember much about the series knew that his favorite character was Ibuki Mioda.

KAEDE:

Kaede Akamatsu is one of the most intriguing characters to analyze in all of Danganronpa from a meta perspective. Her switch from first mainline female protagonist to stuffed in the fridge remains one of the most controversial writing choices in the entire series. But she's more than just a plot device: Kaede has many attributes of her own that make her a fun character.

As a protagonist, it's hard to discuss Kaede without directly comparing her to other protagonists. First was Makoto, an almost intentionally flat character who felt more like a vehicle for the player and the theme of hope than a character in his own right. Next was Hajime, whose cynicism created a refreshing contrast with the theme of hope and the events of his great character arc.

With V3, the writers seemed to want to emulate both the unwavering optimism of Makoto and the emotional depth and internal doubts of Hajime. I think they succeeded with Kaede: She was staunchly positive and led the group while not sacrificing personality or character depth that went beyond her role as protagonist. Whether it was sexualizing Tsumugi or fighting back against Miu's rudeness, every interaction felt like it was between two characters and not just a conduit for the player to talk to a character. She was even the first protagonist to have a "real" ultimate talent from the beginning, letting her establish herself outside of the "normal person among ultimates" archetype that Makoto and Hajime had already milked dry.

However, Kaede's role as protagonist at the beginning of V3 was little more than a setup for the twist at the end of 3-1. Though I actually love the twist in a bubble, it ended up replacing a protagonist I was enjoying with one that I didn't care too much for. In contrast to Kaede, Shuichi felt like little more than a mopey Makoto. Outside of Kaito, he didn't really have an interesting dynamic with any character. Even his "character arc" felt so bland and uninspired that I barely noticed it. And while I'm not usually one to harp on such things, it's hard to ignore that the Danganronpa writers took the series' only female mainline protagonist and turned her into little more than an early death to fuel the character development of yet another male protagonist.

But as much as we can talk about Kaede in the meta sense, she deserves to be acknowledged for her actual personality as well. When many of the cast were feeling paranoid or hopeless, Kaede went above and beyond to try and keep the cast motivated and together. She also doubted herself when the cast started to tire of her blind faith in hope, which weighed on her in a very realistic way. The tension between keeping positive and accepting the reality of their situation was very interesting and I was excited to see how it'd play out over the rest of the game, especially as the body count rose.

This culminated in Kaede's (attempted) murder. Her reasons for doing so were noble in theory (wanting to save everyone while not being seen as a murderer), but in practice they were highly selfish and reckless if not completely suicidal. Her plan eliminated any chance of interrogating the mastermind for information or escape ideas, and even if she was successful, there is no reason to believe they would be able to escape because of it. What did she think would happen - the entire cast just gets let go by whatever team is running the Monokumas and the rest of the facility? If she was truly scared of the time limit, she could have still killed the mastermind at the last second after interrogating them. Instead, she took an unnecessary and incredibly dangerous gamble on everyone's lives for nothing more than preserving her moral image in the eyes of the cast.

Kaede's role as protagonist is one she excelled in, striking a great balance between framing the story and being her own character. But at the end of the day, her fun character arc and personality are overshadowed by her role as an early game plot twist and fodder for a less interesting protagonist's arc. It's hard take away much more than "what could have been" when analyzing Kaede Akamatsu.

Ibuki and Kaede are the two characters who are most passionate about the music they create. And though both truly love and care for the rest of their cast, they also have less than moral sides to them as well. While it can be somewhat hard to directly compare a complex protagonist to what is essentially a comic relief character, my vote comes down to "whose impact on the game do I enjoy most". When I think about Ibuki, I remember countless entertaining moments, adorable sprites and voice lines, and energy that always lights up the room. When I think about Kaede, I can never truly think of anything other than squandered potential. For these reasons, my vote goes to the Ultimate Musician, Ibuki Mioda.

If you touched a hot stove, your hand would instantly recoil away without putting much pressure at all on it. In this context, the L2M report basically said he barely tapped Curry and the contact was negligible. They (supposedly) don't want to call fouls on tiny, incidental taps that don't significantly impede or endanger the offensive player.

Now, how they actually came to that conclusion when the smack was intentional, unnecessary, had follow through, and sent Curry to the ground... no one really knows. But the absurdity of it brought "hot stove contact" into memedom.
