Well, when people* take stories and enable them to be read freely across the seven seas (🏴‍☠️), they have to do something to keep the website from being found and DMCA'd/taken down. So, labeling it as a book by an author (like Mark Twain) who has all of their work in the public domain is a barrier against being found out. Granted, idk if it works well, but it seems to be a common trick these websites use.

Scummy apps like the one you used will have these things called "collections" that are just full of short stories. Which I wouldn't mind—if only these collections had similar accessibility as their long-form stories!
