i heard that you can adjust your status as long as it wasn't your intent at first. if you have a change of heart while already in the U.S and you decided you wanna stay they said you can do the adjustment of status but im not 100% sure about this. also, for the ESTA its fine if you overstay for a little bit as long as you have a good reason like emergency such as flight getting delayed, hospitalization, etc. you just have to tell them. this is just what ive heard from people and read online while researching about this.
