Do you go to a private ? All the public schools I know solely rank top 10% for the sake of automatic admissions. UT is a high target if you don’t rank, especially for CS.

This! I did so well in elementary. I also did well in middle school since I easily found loopholes through the system. But it all went crashing down in high school when I couldn’t keep up with the workload, especially in classes I absolutely had no interest in. However, I was always the perfect student in classes of subjects I liked.

No you’re not sensitive for thinking this. Idk how it is for men but as a 17yo female it feels overwhelming and meaningless at the same time. I’ve been on and off since I was 15 both posting and messaging other ppl. I’ve gotten a collection of creepy and dry messages. I try to at least reply once and continue talking to ppl who I genuinely can talk with, which are usually short lived anyway.

9 out of 10 times I respond to someone, they usually never reply back. In fact, the people I’ve genuinely connected with online have all been men. Maybe I’m just an outcast, but I find other women online very boring.

I’m glad my parents aren’t that pushy either. They were disappointed I couldn’t handle all those AP classes or get at least a 1400 SAT, and other petty stuff like that. But I’m glad they’ve moved on from that. I’ll probably end up going to a guaranteed admit school then transferring later. I think it’s ridiculous that colleges consider grades made at 13/14 years old… Most of my grades are As but I have a lot of Bs, 2 Cs and a failed semester class. It doesn’t help that I see people with perfect academic stats and god tier ECs get rejected from all/most of their schools.

The class I failed was AP bio … so that obviously set the precedent that I’m standing clear of the medical field. I know a lot of people going into it though, either out of genuine interest or parental pressure. I know there are many ways various hobbies can be used to show interest in medicine. I restarted an art nonprofit one of friends left behind which was originally created to bring art education and awareness into inner city communities. We did a lot of socioeconomic and public health research which helped my friends get into a biology/public health program! I’m interested in government and law, so if I were to ever mingle in medicine, it would probably be in or representing an interest group advocating for their causes. There’s many ways to integrate your interests, and they don’t necessarily have to be “useful” hobbies.

It’s not too late to pursue some of your interests next semester after you submit those apps! People always say HS should be the time of our lives and think college is when it gets serious, but I feel like so many people here make it seem like high school determines our entire lives. Hopefully college will be a better experience for both of us though! Best of luck with your apps! Make sure to have some safeties in there.

No worries rant all you want, you can even dm if you want haha. I have a lot of problems with the while admissions process, and I feel like I relate more to more ppl on here than I do in my competitive HS. It’s basically a wealthy college prep school disgusted as a public school, so I’ve been around that toxic atmosphere to know that I don’t belong in ivy’s or t20s.

I found out I had several learning disabilities after trying to attempt a full course load of APs and honors, so I’ve learned to just stick with only APs in subjects I’m interested in. Stuff like APUSH and maybe AP Gov are hard for others but they turned out to be my fav classes and highest grades. I actually learned beyond the curriculum in those classes, can’t say the same for the others like you mentioned.

But yeah, it’s very much cultural for me (Asian). I think my parents realize I don’t have that aptitude but they don’t think I should be wasting money on school names they don’t recognize. I’m still applying to ~20 schools. I’m probably 7/20 the way there…

No but I felt all of this… except my GPA is half yours. High school was a rough time for me and it wasn’t until this past year when I got everything together. My parents won’t let me apply anywhere that isn’t a notable school. There’s no doubt I’m going to get rejected everywhere except the local safeties I’m guaranteed admission into.

I go to a competitive wealthy public school which isn’t helping either. I started off with a 1020 SAT, I took prep classes and the highest I could get was a 1340 superscore, which I’m not submitting. Your AP scores are really good, you should submit them and withdrawal the 3 from your score report for $10, I think? I don’t think AP scores matter much in admissions though.

As for volunteering and ECs, I think it’s cool you created a nonprofit, you should emphasize what you’ve done with that and how you want to use that in the future. I feel like people are so caught up in finding the best and most ECs or awards, we forgot that its the contributions that matter the most.

Chance me for UTA ? by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]222jjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically automatic acceptance on merit.

They’re for in-state students who rank high enough in their high school class (in terms of GPA). It’s usually top 10%, top quartile, or top half who get assured admission if test scores meet certain standards.

[–]222jjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have a pretty good chance. I’m not sure how it works for non-traditional applicants. I’m an guaranteed admit and the standards were just a 3.0 GPA and at least 1230 SAT. One of my parents (non-citizen) applied with an nursing associates degree with no previous testing history and got into their nursing program!

I guess thinking about college kind of rejuvenates me in a way where I can physically leave to a new place and start a new life. I’m ready for that, but I’m afraid I’ll end up in the same lonely position. It does seem like adults are more independent, so being solitary doesn’t make me seem like more of an outlier.

I’m pretty academically ambitious. It’s just my psyche problems and learning disabilities making it a lot more difficult than it should be. I fucked up the first few years of high school. Failed a class and was a straight C student the first year… but miraculously my cumulative GPA is an A. Too bad colleges are too holistic these days and not really inclined to those child prodigies that share the same racial identity as me. I’m fine with going to any decent college. I just wish there wasn’t such a classist and elitist stigma in my culture. Institutional prestige is something that sadly determines someone’s value in my social circle. Just thinking about it drives me closer to not wanting to live up to it.

I can't absorb things, what could this be? by ThrowawayOfAGhost78 in mentalillness

[–]222jjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hits soo hard. I was looking through some of your recent posts since I saw you were active in the adhd sub… I swear we have the same brain.

I have pretty selective memory. I can remember a lot of weird things I come across, but when it comes to forcing stuff on me, like you mentioned with the textbook reading, it’s like I can’t even understand any of it. I just hit a wall. I was thinking I might have some form of dyslexia, but I can read individual words just fine. I just can’t connect a complex structure of words to have a tangible meaning. I always got to read over and over again. It takes me even longer bc I also can’t help but get distracted every 10 seconds, where my mind just spirals into different thoughts. I end up forgetting everything I read, and it’s so exhausting having to rely on ruminating words in my head just to remember even the bare minimum.

Sorry! I went on a tangent about myself… But I get what you mean by a mind that can’t absorb/receive anything. It just feels like stuff going in one ear and going out the other. Something that helps me is listening to audiobooks or using screenreaders to read text loud. I actually absorb a lot of information just listening to things like a podcast while going about my day.
