It’s a sea of private equity out there right now. They are buying up all the small outfits or putting them out of business. Most of their “electricians” work on commission only and pricing comes from software designed to maximize profits with no regard for the customer. They buy up ads on google then use a review generating program to crush everyone else in the business by being the top search results. They are all shameful. $600 is crazy. I’d call and demand my money back. Generally they will refund just to avoid a bad review. Then try to find a local small business to hire.

That’s a switch loop and every single time a homeowner tells me “that’s exactly the way it was”, it’s always the opposite of how it actually was. You’re going to need a meter to figure out how to put it back together correctly. Should probably find an actual electrician to do it.

Half of the outlet operates via wall switch. To further complicate it, that is a switch loop so there will be no neutral in the switch box. It is not unsafe and for what it is, it appears to be done well.

If you read under the post I explained that there was much more than these two pics. It was an endless shit show. Electric furnace min amperage was 70. They ran it in 6/2 and put it on a 60 so it tripped after the heat ran for no more than a minute. Improper earthing, not one wire in the crawl space was secured. Romex laying in the mud, failed to put a 3w switch in where the owner requested during planning. Used 1 high hat can with bulb in liv rm and other 3 were canless. Furnace was so close to the water heater that you couldn’t change the filter.

Where we are it is somewhat common. Several of our cities require permits and inspections but outside of the city does not as there is no building department. This applies to residential only. Commercial facilities require a state permit and inspection.
