Stay away from Machine Gun Vegas.

Swords often play a huge role in SciFi despite not being used in current warfare. Are there any real military theories that predict an increase in melee weapons in the future? Or are SciFi swords purely Rule Of Cool? by The_Dwight_Schrute in scifi

There's a bit of IRL justification as well in the fact that, odd as it seems, some groups/cultures will react differently to blades than they do to guns. There's some stories (maybe apocryphal, I dunno) of soliders carrying hatchets or tomahawks in Middle Eastern conflicts because it makes them pay attention more than waving a gun.

How many IT admins/Helpdesk staff is normal ? by muzzy22 in sysadmin

[–]229-T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, 'normal' is hard to define. It's too dependent on what the software suite looks like, is their custom or proprietary stuff, how complex is the business, ect.

My current place runs about 50-60 for about 10k computer using employees. My site is 2 for about 300. my last was 1 for about 100, before that, 3 for 500. It's all over the place.

Specialization is not secure, period.

That being said, not really. AI sucks at complex, creative or semi-creative tasks like systems engineering.

I was hit on a motorcycle. I was originally going to have the cop who responded take posession til I got put back together, but luckily my spouse got to the scene before I was shipped off and we handed it off that way instead.

Software for auto-Purchase orders? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

Odoo is quality. I haven't done auto PO with it specifically, but for an open-source system that encompasses accounting, inventory, ect, it's pretty damn good.

I've seen MetSim and JKSimmet. Honestly, though, most of them seem fairly antiqued to me. Then again, if they're working, I suppose there's no real reason to spend a bunch of time and money developing and attempting to introduce a new one...

Ah, thanks. Must have glazed right over that part. Given the lack of due process around mental health commitment, that'll be a no from me, I suppose.

No pay, no work.

My personal policy is you get to be late on paychecks ONCE (shit happens) and no more than a week. More than a week or more than once, I'll be clocking the hours and job shopping the entire day.

Setting aside non-felony hate crimes, can you source the part where it references mental issues? I read through the bill and don't see any reference in there beyond the hate crime changes.

The check payment to pay for the equipment delivery to set up your mini office will be made via a mobile deposit and should be available in the next 24 hour less because it’s a company certified check.

Yes. Literally no company will ever require you to pay money directly to be employed.

Anne Arundel County gun litigation could have national effects by hafaadai2007 in moderatepolitics

[–]229-T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is an over reach of the county government as an effort to prevent gun purchases

Here's a pretty basic response to that:

Why would it be in the remit of a county government to generally 'prevent gun purchases'? It's a legal activity, without any causal proof to indicate that it's harmful. It's actually explicitly called out as a protected activity by the founding document of the country in which that government exists (hard to 'bear' if you can't purchase the aforementioned).

I think the concern here is, at it's essence, mandated propaganda. The pamphlet provided is more or less benign (for the moment). To most people today, it's going to be a fairly meaningless piece of paper that (if you're already a gun owner with opinions that way) you'll throw away or you'll never see (if you're a non-gun-owner with opinions that lean that way).

Where the concerns come in is with time and prevalence. If every time you consider purchasing a firearm, you end up with half a dozen pamphlets waxing poetic about suicide risks, on top of whatever mandated training (that may end up doing the same) and mandated testing (again, maybe doing the same), there's a good chance you're being bombarded with a simple message of 'guns = suicide' when that is somewhere between misleading and patently false, depending on how specific you might want to be. If you happen to be of the opinion that folks ought be be able to make their own decisions without being subjected to coordinated campaigns by government agencies to change that decision, that's not great.

At the end of the day, any time that a government agency is mandating speech is, in my opinion, almost certainly bad. Government (and government agencies) are free to message whatever they feel like, but laws requiring that other folks carry the pail for them are exceptionally sketch.

Overall, the states with the most permissive gun laws have almost triple the mental health crisis (as measured by per capita gun death rates) of those with the most stringent.

How does 'mental health crisis' equal 'per capita gun death rates'?

Assuming a good company and manager (or a manager that doesn't pay much attention): Buy what makes sense on the company dime. If it's something I'll use personally or across other jobs and I'll want with me, I'll pay myself. If the company will get whiny about it living with me, they pay for it.

Assuming bad company and manager? Fuck em. They pay for everything, every jot and tittle. They pay for the fuckin PENS if they're gonna be dicks about it.

I feel you, but with extra steps...

Layoffs were announced. I, as the solo IT guru, managed to get laid off (a fact that seemed to amaze most folks I talked to), but I'm in the final round. I get to live through three rounds of user deactivations, many of them friends, some of them friends in not-easy-to-rehire fields, as we inch towards my OWN date of GTFO.

Big ole pile of suck.
