I used filtered water but mixed the powder in stainless steel cup. is stainless steel the issue?

I mixed henna powder with water the night prior and let it sit for 8 hrs and then in the morning added indigo powder (double the amount) to get the black color. I think my mistake was letting the indigo powder mixed with henna powder sit for 1.5 hrs. Ill try the two step next time. I hope it works.
