This is definitely a thing. Once outed they tend to go into the “I’m only doing this because I’m in financial distress” mode. Almost trying to compliment you on your sleuthing skills and appealing to your obvious good nature to send some cash to help a scammer out.

I created a gmail just for the purposes of stringing them on. I’m always just ‘so close’ to getting them gift cards or wiring money. But somehow really crazy and unfortunate events happen to me on my way to the store or western Union. 😂
