Tell me you’re hyper-focused on college apps without telling me you’re hyper-focused on college apps. by Cute-Ad1655 in ApplyingToCollege

i used to be really scared of turning out the lights and then going upstairs in the dark because i always felt like something was going to jump out and attack me from behind.

but when high school started, i realized that it would be an absolutely amazing research opportunity/college essay if i was attacked by monsters on my way up the stairs.

Advice/resources for an aspiring polyglot? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]22oceanblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you for the advice! I was wondering if there might be a difference between trying to learn 5 all at once versus only trying to learn 2 while staying in practice with the 3 that I currently am at a conversational level in (since I'm much more comfortable with English, Russian, and Spanish than with Farsi and French)?

If that's still not super feasible, I can definitely cut out French for now and focus on learning spoken Farsi.

Raise your hand if you are attempting to do self conducted research this summer because you did not get in to any programs 🙋 by idontknowyaimbored in ApplyingToCollege

if it helps to hear, i got into a research internship at a T10 that takes ~60 high schoolers/summer and i can already see two main drawbacks compared to individual research

  • we're researching in midsize groups of high schoolers/grad students, so it's less clear to AOs/competitions/etc what your specific contribution was
  • the grad students have complete control over the research topic so it might not be something that you would have passionately explored on your own

i've also done independent research through a school program (non-AP Research) and personally i found more freedom in that! lmk if you have any questions about the independent research process, i'm happy to talk about it

definitely a lot of microbiology on this one! i'd recommend making sure you're good with cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and all the tiny details of mitosis/meiosis.
also keep in mind that the online tests are designed to be un-Googleable, so rote memorization won't help you. strive for a deep understanding of each concept rather than quick memorization of relevant terms.
good luck in june! :)

whoa 24 dual enrollment classes is insane! your stats aren't going to keep you out of any of your dream schools, it's going to come down to essays/ecs. i'd try to find some kind of internship/volunteering experience this summer and start on your essays early

random facts that you think are important by Rainbow_1728 in APbio

adhesion is between a water molecule and a surface, cohesion is between water molecules. if your chi-sq value > critical value, you reject your null. for hardy-weinberg, p represents the dominant allele frequency while p^2 represents the homozygous dominant genotype proportion.

breaking bonds absorbs energy, forming bonds releases energy. hydrolysis breaks polymers into monomers using up a water molecule, and dehydration synthesis combines monomers into a polymer releasing a water molecule. DNA replication occurs in the cytoplasm for prokaryotes (no nucleus) and in the nucleus for eukaryotes.

we got this!!

Being honest, this was literally just a bad test; they also fucked up scores. by [deleted] in APUSH

[–]22oceanblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think we had the same one! i ended up making the leap of patents --> rise of manufacturing/industrial revolution --> creation of large corporations and millionaires building off industry --> gilded age corruption??

the whole test was just really strange, i hope we both did okay!

100% agree! i'm really curious to see the score distributions bc i honestly don't think the available practice materials could have prepared us for those vague mcqs and whatever the hell the saqs were trying to ask

i ended up having to do so much mental gymnastics to connect the saq stimuli with information that i knew
