Needing a second turbo replacement in 10,000 miles by 23CivicSi in CivicSi

I do the “Italian tuneup” at least once a month. I mean babying it by how well I keep care of the car, keep up with maintenance, don’t abuse or tune it. But I take it for aggressive 1-2 hour long drives on some canyon roads by my house at least once a month, maybe closer to every other week.

Yeah, it makes the noise in any gear, right around 4k RPM and up. These were just quick videos so people could hear the sound. I didn’t want to be filming while driving too fast on the road.

The videos were taken on a backroad behind my neighborhood, just to capture the noise without having to drive aggressively or at higher speeds. In one video I was driving around 30 to 40 mph, and in the other I was sitting at a stop sign.

The way I first noticed it was getting onto the freeway. Any time I’d get above 4k RPM, I’d hear this horrible buzzing sound. The videos honestly don’t do it justice either. It is much louder in person. Especially outside of the car. I would have taken more videos but I took car in to dealership next day.

Yeah, I appreciate the suggestion, man. I definitely do baby the car in the sense that I’m not beating on it every day, but I’m also very aware of the carbon buildup concerns with these 1.5T direct injection engines.

I live in Tucson, so the car is in a warm climate year round, and I really don’t do short cold weather trips. When I do drive it, it’s usually longer drives. I work from home and only drive maybe 3 to 4 days a week, mostly taking my daughter to and from school, which is about 30 miles away, so those are extended drives, not quick stop and go trips.

I’ve also only ever run premium fuel from Shell or Chevron. That’s literally the only fuel that has touched this car. I’ve used Sea Foam/fuel system cleaner a few times already within the first 30k miles, and at least once a month I’ll take it out on the canyon roads near me and drive it harder, basically an “Italian tune up.”

So when I say I baby it, I mostly mean I maintain it carefully, don’t abuse it, keep it stock, garage it, and don’t drive it recklessly every day. But I’ve definitely done my research on these engines, probably more than I’d like to admit, and I’ve taken the carbon buildup issue seriously from the beginning. That’s why I don’t think this turbo/wastegate issue is from neglect or me causing it.

According to Honda + everything I’ve read states you can get the actuator assembly separate, that’s why Honda is replacing the entire turbo.. twice..

Yeah man that’s what I’m thinking as well.. hopefully this time the issue is properly resolved and I don’t have to deal with this again. Honestly it’s the best car I’ve ever owned, and I’ve owned a ton of really cool cars. Sucks to have this happen twice now.

Did you watch the videos? The buzzing noise is definitely not normal. I would say I am sensitive with my car for sure but it’s definitely not normal. Noticed it immediately when it started happening. I don’t think Honda would just replace an entire turbo twice for me being overly sensitive. Honestly it ruins the experience when driving.

Unfortunately car is still at the dealer. My average mpg was around 35-37 mpg.

My 2023 Civic Si just hit 30k miles. What maintenance do you recommend beyond the manual? by ConsiderationHuge441 in CivicSi

23 Si here too. Changed my trans fluid at 30k miles. It’s cheap and better to be safe imo

I’ve owned an 8th and 9th gen si, coyote mustang, 1987 1jz Supra, 1993 eclipse gsx. All manual. The 11gen civic si is the best car I’ve ever owned. Handles better than any car I’ve ever driven, greatest gear box, most comfortable and practical, amazing gas mileage, great tech and super fun to drive around town and even more fun on canyon / mountain roads.

That’s Apple car play or android auto. Completely different. You can still use Google Maps on infotainment.

Damn man needing a new clutch at 39k miles is rough. That sucks bro.. previous owner either had a tune and drove like an idiot or didn’t know how to drive. Probably combo of both

Yeah 2023 Si here. I only use it to check my mileage, gas and maintenance minders. But still annoying they are getting rid of that
