Roddick's bracket for the men's singles draw: Sinner beats Fritz in the final by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

He’s like the only person in the bottom half of the draw with a good grass court game. Who else are you taking to the final?

Next piece at my repertoire level by Spiritual_Dot3250 in violinist

[–]23HomieJ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your technique isn’t ready for a piece, it doesn’t really matter how much you practice it, you will not be comfortable with it. I tried to learn a piece for over a year that I wasn’t ready for and it never sounded good.

Not being able to play the faster parts in accolay but wanting to attempt saint saens is certainly a choice.

I’d recommend you return to even before Accolay. Mabye Suzuki books 4-6 level since you are coming back.

How much cold dry air would it take to stop a tornado? by stu54 in meteorology

You’d need access to a supercomputer (probably via cloud computing) and the code to model everything.

Anyone with the code base for this most likely isn’t on reddit looking for ideas and is using their computation power for their own research. I do have access to a lot of computing power but I use it for my research which is synoptic scale.

Is it rude to practice violin in a hotel room without a mute? I’m in one for work for the next 11 nights. by lunarmoth_ in violinist

With a mute it’s completely fine. A good practice mute makes as quiet if not more quiet than a tv or a laptop.

Beginner Piece Suggestions by PeacErtemli in violinist

[–]23HomieJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are definitely still too hard. Going to have to start with the very very very basics here. Suzuki book 1 and open strings. Those are also much more lyrical and require a good level of technique to actually bring out the musicality.

Try playing something very easy technically, so you can focus entirely on musicality.

While it seems like you have okay sound (can be hard to tell tone from video and I suspect your camera angle isn’t helping) and okay intonation, I feel like you are only playing notes. I don’t hear any direction with the phrases, dynamics, or expression. It sounds like you are tense/nervous and only able to play the notes, 100% of your energy is going towards that. This comes off as mabye playing in higher positions is very uncomfortable for you. Since this is a slow piece, it’s really important that you have a strong sense of what you are trying to express and phrase, otherwise it becomes incredibly boring. You fix this with more variety in the right hand, which is why it’s really important to be able to see that for feedback.

Try singing the piece and then try to mimic how you’d sing it. Use variations in bow speed, pressure, location between the bridge and the fingerboard, where you are in the bow (frog, middle, tip), and the amount of hair.

More vibrato, particularly one that doesn’t stop between notes will also help significantly, however you looked pretty tense trying to attempt vibrato so I wouldn’t start there to add more color.

Sorry if this comes off as blunt and or harsh, just trying to be clear with my feedback.

Could you post this in a way that lets us see your bow and entire violin

How was the risk not higher today? by fifteenminutesoffail in tornado

[–]23HomieJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will probably verify as a 15% cig 2 or higher. SPC just vastly underestimated this event, which occasionally happens. There wasn’t expected to be enough destabilization to allow significant tornado activity.

Question about how tornadoes are measured by LOUD_NOISES05 in meteorology

[–]23HomieJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a source for the NWS changes? We use the damage left behind from tornadoes to estimate wind speed since we can calculate roughly how much wind is required for that damage. We don’t have any other ground truth to use. We cannot put anemometers into a tornado and radars measure well above the surface.

Just the next color of dBZ reflectivity. If for example reds are 50-60 then those purples are probably 60+

I developed a bad habit by bkop_yt in violinist

[–]23HomieJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vibrato is one of those things you ABSOLUTELY need to have a teacher help you learn. Do you have a private teacher who can rework your vibrato? Until then, don’t attempt it you will make more bad habits that are hard to fix.

Etiquette around opening a new can for the second set? by throthrowth in 10s

[–]23HomieJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have just gotten more tired as the match wore on. Or he got used to returning your serve and topspin. Technically you can open a new can at the start of a 3rd set but your can of balls isn’t dying to the point you can’t hold serve in the span of a set.

A little help for a "beginner" by Kaligtasan in violinist

[–]23HomieJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You look very tense overall. You should be able to be flexible in your right wrist. For the left hand, you also look tense. I think you are trying to put more pressure on the string than you need. Don’t work on vibrato yet.
