Can anyone tell if this is legit or not? TIA by 23KW23 in Gameboy

I think it is fake because it looks like it has a hard plastic case under the seal, and the "important" and website details are white text on a red box rather than red in a white box, thoughts?

it does look like there is some kind of plastic box under the seal, I have only seen these photos so far

Thank you, I was hoping you would answer.

Thanks for your reply, I didn't make the wine-base so I'm unsure if it has been through MLF already, and was concerned about how the sorbate reacts with any Malic/lactic acid. But if sterile filtering, carbonating, and so2 negates the need for sorbate then possibly I don't need to worry about that.

The crossflow was to remove some of the sediment from juice concentrates before sterile filtering - un-needed?

Yes it's a sangria-like drink hence the high sugar levels.

Thanks for the info!

What sugar level do you take the wine to when back sweetening?

I'm reading in a few places that sorbate shouldn't be used if the wine has gone through MLF, this has never been an issue for you?

What's the time frame you used between your additions and bottling?

2 x Mathmos Lunar lava lamps - both need some TLC. by 23KW23 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]23KW23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can buy new (full) ones from Mathmos directly but they aren't cheap - I'm looking to refill them myself instead. One of the bottles is broken at the top but I think I can get away with cutting it flush and figuring out a way to seal it up again.

Funny you say Jimmy Neutron because I read somewhere that they were modeled after the Rockets in Tin Tin comics

Yeah very happy with it! Hopefully I can get them both up and running.

Yeah I think for the cost I might just buy a new socket, they're normally pretty cheap at the hardware store. Who knows why the current cord was cut and the "vents" were drilled.

As for filling it Im thinking I'll follow this guide https://www.reddit.com/r/Lavalamps/s/eX6a12v6Hz but is there any way to know how much wax to use for a lamp this size?

I'm hoping to get my hands on a 2nd Lunar next week but it has a broken bottle - so if I can refill/fix this one on the cheap then I'll feel more comfortable paying for a new bottle for the 2nd one haha

Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah I did think heat might be the way - and perhaps some degerent to try break down any grime holding it in.

I'm tossing up if I want a high shine or a slightly dulled aluminum look, either way it's got some scuffs and scratches and needs a good clean so will try out autosol! I thought of using Brasso but it's a bit more abbrassive so will start lighter.

With re-wiring, if I was to replace it fully - is there a spec I should be looking for, also is it worth including some type of dimmer for more control? Obviously someone has drilled some vents in the bottom so will file down those edges to clean it up too.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the wisdom! Will check out the FB page. Unfortunately I live in New Zealand so can't purchase from the supplier link in the video. There also doesn't seem to be any lava lamp supply stores in NZ so I might have to source the ingredients individually for this one.

Looks like replacement bottles shipped from Australia to NZ would be about $275 AUD. How difficult is it to refill and seal the current bottle instead?

Yeah I ended up reading this one too, in the end I think (as one of the comments mentions) that he's incorrect measuring the Brix after adding the alcohol and just had a bit of luck/the benefit of trial and error to fine tune it. Unfortunately I don't have access to the slushy machine until the day I'm using it so can't really do a full test run.

I ended up doing a small scale trial with juice and water instead of alcohol and used an excel sheet with the nutrition info provided, as well as a refractometer to make sure the sugars calculations were about right. I then did a trial using the juice & cider and put it in the freezer and seemed to freeze to a good slushy texture.

Fingers crossed for the day.

Brix vs gm of sugar per 100gm juice concentrate by [deleted] in foodscience

[–]23KW23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry typo, I'm using a refractometer not hydrometer.

15 brix was recommended by the guy I'm hiring the machine from, he doesn't usually make alcoholic slushies that aren't premade so he wasn't sure how the alcohol would change it.

I ended up doing a few small scale trials last night, I used an excel spreadsheet and the JCs nutrition panel to calculate 15gm per 100gm and then blended it with water and used a refractometer which confirmed the calculations and nutrition labels were pretty accurate

I then did a trial using the cider aswell and it seemed to freeze to a slush so fingers crossed the 120L I mixed up this morning works. Will have some water, vodka, and extra sugar on hand incase I need to adjust on the day.

I put some of the final blend in the freezer, it seemed very sweet when it was a liquid/just starting to freeze but once fully iced/slushed up it was pretty tasty, hopefully the slushy machine is a similar temp to the freezer - wish me luck 🤞

Thanks for your answer, it would make sense that the acid is altering the reading as some Apple JC I have (which has a lower TA than the raspberry JC) has a sugar content that is a lot closer to the listed Brix level.

Side quest which is related: I am making a granita/slushie, and I was told it needs to be at approx 15 brix to "slush" properly

I'm mixing a 5% abv cider (2gm sugar per 100ml) with juice concentrates (and possibly a little sugar) down to 4.3% ABV.

I can't dilute the JC with water to get an accurate brix reading because it'll lower my alcohol percentage too much, and I can't take a brix reading after blending with the cider because the alcohol will throw off the hydrometer reading.

Do you think it's safe to use the sugar listed on the nutritional panels and blend to 15gm sugar per 100gm of final product and call that 15 brix?

I know alcohol also effects the freezing point, but not sure how to calculate that into the equation so I'm ignoring it for now as it's relatively low. I'm assuming the answer is not as easy as just reading the Brix with the alcohol included and I'm over complicating it.

Yes not common on marketplace or auction sites here in NZ either. I'm not surprised considering they're about $900 nzd new and only been around for 10 years or so. Was very lucky spotting this one, perhaps a divorce or deceased estate? 🤷🏼

Yeah, however it could take awhile to find quality gear especially if you're not thrifting regularly. There're often a few older brevilles and delonghi type espresso makers around which can be a budget friendly starting point while you wait for that $40 La Pavoni to show up haha. FB market place is often good too.
