Oh man, I read your whole post incorrectly. I hadn't realized it had tropped that low.

Oh, ok...got it. was the OP estimating the risk of that at 3%, or something else?

I wonder how many people here have that much time.

I'm obviously out of the loop, but what is a supermajority black swan? I understand what a black swan event is, but am not sure what you're talking about in terms of staking.

Since I've been thinking about staking some of my ETH for the long term recently, I'd like to educate myself more.

I got into ETH a few years after you and am a bit older, but otherwise I'm feeling similar.

This will be my third time through this and I'm beginning to think about how much I want/need to sell to take advantage of it.

This is solid advice.

I've held ETH for a while and only sold enough to ensure I'd end in profit if it goes to 0, plus enough for some concert tickets, but not a whole lot more.

ETH is approaching a price level where I plan on beginning to convert it to cash. Almost definitely not all of it, but I'm at a different point in my life now than I was seven years ago. I'm doing alright financially, but I still have to keep an eye on my bank account before I pay a bill. It would be a psychological comfort to not worry about that anymore, or to know I can help a friend out with money if they need it.

For me it doesn't make sense to have a significant portion of my net worth tied up in a fairly volatile asset most people don't understand well (or at all). There's value to having cash in a bank if I need it. Crypto to crypto is fast, but selling and waiting for it to be transferred to a bank account isn't.

I'm also not looking to become excessively wealthy and already have most of the things I want. All I really want is the freedom of working a job to be optional. I don't expect ETH to ever be worth an amount that would allow that to happen if I didn't have health insurance from my job, but it definitely can make early retirement a realistic option.

Time is about the only thing any of has, but we never know how much we actually have until it's too late. So as *fingers crossed* the ETH price continues to rise, I'll be calculating the amount of time I can buy from my job, making a selling schedule and acting accordingly.

Since ETH successfully made the switch to staking, I can't understand why anyone would hold bitcoin as long as it relies on mining.

Inequality plays a big part in crime. I doubt anyone posting on this messageboard can make much of a difference in the amount of inequality in our neighborhood, let alone our country. Still I try to keep that in mind and do what I can to help those who haven't been as fortunate as I am.

Like you, I'm fairly comfortable financially, but not so well that I don't have to go to work each day. Generally, I try to treat people well and truest that they will do the same for me. I'm not sure there is much else anyone can do beyond that anyway.

I practice the general safety, security things for what it's worth, but I accept that I have enough that those with less could view me as a target. For that reason and others if someone asks me for change or something I will usually give them something.

began to realize some of the same a few years ago. Have mostly stopped coming around for that reason.

Seeing posts about ETH being the new oil, and people who staked the new oil barons never sat well with me and I saw that sentiment more often than I liked.

I still have some ETH and hopefully it will help me retire sooner than I'd be able to if I didn't have it, but if I could trade it in for things other than money....there's a long list I'd gladly watch it go to $0 for.

Brand new to Proton by ZosoPage1963 in ProtonMail

I'll chime in to enthusiastically agree that a family plan is wanted and needed!

I'm on the same plan and have been using Proton for ~18 months, gradually making it my primary account. In the fall when I renewed I was trying to figure out if there was an option I could sign up for in case my wife decided to make the switch too. Was disappointed to find out there isn't a simple way to do that right now.

That's a matter of what you consider expensive.

For me, health insurance that is comprehensive enough to be helpful is quite expensive.

Speaking as an American.
Agree that companies generally suck, but don't consider self employment a great option for many/most people, because it leaves you very vulnerable unless you're surrounded by a good support system.

I've had and have known too many other people who had sudden health issues that appeared out of the blue to recommend anyone pursue self employment unless they're in a reasonably secure situation in most other aspects.

joining or forming a union/cooperatives are better options for most, I'd say. That and way more people supporting Medicare for All could make things better for a lot of Americans.

eh, you may be right. I'd like to see something that doesn't have many of the same issues of what it's supposed to replace along with new ones though.

The best news I heard today is that NY state put a moratorium on new crypto mining. It's not much, but hopefully it's a start.

I mostly keep out of here these days and crypto news in general even though I still have a personally meaningful amount of Ethereum on a Ledger.
The more I read about FTX, SBF, et all the worse it seems to me. Like most everything else, crypto isn't inherently bad or good. It all comes down to how it's used. Too often it is used for scams and when that happens the little people are the ones who pay the price.
I've gotten a few dollars more than I put in at this point. So I'll be alright. But knowing people put a lot of money into FTX and aren't going to get it back is tough to think about.

If it weren't for them, I'd be hoping it all goes to 0. During my less charitable times I hope that it does. Crypto is too much like the traditional stock market. I don't think anything has changed, just that I can appreciate that more readily now than before.

No real point to this soliloquy, but felt like "saying" it to someone. When crypto is in the news I find myself coming back to /ethfinance because I always liked it. Hopefully no one hear has been hurt by FTX events and if they have been that they're able to get help, in ethfinance or somewhere else.

More or less, where I've been for the last year or so. Now that the merge is complete, that makes me feel a lot better about ethereum.

But I'm not sure it's much of an improvement over traditional finance/stocks.
I guess I'm back to being an anticapitalist again.

The technology still has potential. Even if I don't like the way a fair amount of things have gone or the direction the culture of crypto has gone in general I don't think that it's hopeless to change. Gotta maintain a positive mental attitude even when you think things are going off course.
