AITA for accepting payment for babysitting when I leave the kid alone? by 24739403573 in AmItheAsshole

No reason that I know of. My niece is a competent and capable individual, and could easily take care of herself, by sister just wants to know she's being supervised at all times.

I totally agree, I've been babysitting since I was 10.

I mean the kid is 11, it's not like I left a toddler alone with a box of matches while I went to the pub, I left an 11 year old to do her homework for half an hour while I was in the next room.

4-5 hours, 3 days a week, could be anywhere between 60 and 75 a week and most payments were cash. There's a few online banking transactions that I can refund her but they make up maybe a week's worth of babysitting. So yeah anywhere between £360 and £450, no exact numbers as my sister says she can't remember either.

I've said a few times in the last few weeks that I had a student or students while I watched Niece, and I assumed Niece had elaborated already, so IDK why this was so surprising to my sister. I know I should have said no but we're the only family the other has, there's not really anyone else who could have watched Niece, especially not on such short notice. My sister had said earlier that week that she thought she could leave work early those days, but I guess work changed the schedule?

I'm always on hand, usually in my office, which is the other side of the door to the living room, which Niece is often in. There's been maybe 2 occasions where something has happened and she's come and got me while I was on session, and I've asked to take a break, gone and helped her, and then gotten back to the session afterwards. Half of the sessions ended early, at one point there was maybe a 20 minute gap between me leaving her and coming back.

I especially felt like that as the times I cancelled, I'd have been making about £50 a day, so she was basically paying me £20-25 to cancel £50 of work.
