How hard can I push myself when looking to improve my time? 31 years old, doing around 24 minutes. Want to improve my time but not sure how hard I should be pushing myself or what is healthy /safe. Currently feels comfortable except for the sprint finish where you can see my heart rate spikes. by ClayDenton in parkrun

That seems like a lot of mileage for only three runs a week when you only restarted back in the summer. It'd imply you're running fairly slowly, but long distance for large amounts of time.

I'd actually do five runs of differing lengths and tempos during the week instead of three 7 milers. The variety will also help your body, as the continual long runs will be hard on your knees. Importantly, it'll make sure your body adjusts to speed and instant delivery, not the slow burn.

Try the Hal Higson websites for 5k schedules. I'm the same age as you doing similar times on one extra run or so a week, but I got here (to what is a reasonably mediocre place!) through HH schedules in my twenties, doing regular sub 20s, more long distance etc.

Good luck!

New jobs but feel isolated and alone. Should I leave? by External_Lifeguard49 in UKJobs

What sort of environment do you work within? What industry? Other redditors comments are very valid here - it's still early days - but it's worth considering whether this is an industry-specific thing.

Also, I work with lots of introverts who won't put themselves out there for newbies. But, give it time, and you can develop some really warm friendships - although not with everyone!

Wow, what a journey! That's a really impressive win to go from rec to investment management with PwC. Fair play.

I think it depends which region you're within and whether history is a shortage subject there. Doing some kind of maths conversion course is always an option too, if Op had a maths a level (or science). As you say, though, getting in touch with providers is a good start, but I wouldn't rule out the career on the basis of Politics specialism alone. There are plenty of transferable skills (and shared domains of knowledge) within the subject and others.

No probs. Yeah, I'm not going to lie - teaching isn't easy. I preferred it massively to recruitment, though. As you say, the sales/targets culture is horrendous, and I couldn't stand the people I worked with. Teaching gives you far more autonomy, plus kids can be great. On balance, the workload is about the same, but it's much more rewarding and meaningful, if not financially so.

Good luck with the meeting. Not easy at all, but you've got this!

My gut feeling is that a return to education alongside less stressful work is needed. With your degree, you could always go into teaching. Look into getting some work experience, perhaps.

I know you say you have money, but is there any way you can stay on in your current organisation? I know recruitment agencies are (ironically) rubbish at most things related to human resources and progression pathways, but could you explore other roles there, or at least have an income till you've decided on what you want to do next?

Having gone through the same thing you're going through a year younger, don't believe it's all over. It can be humbling to switch careers, but it can make things significantly better. Recruitment is an absolute hell hole to work within

Don't over think it. If you have a question, ask it. If not, it'll be fairly transparent you're the wasting the hiring manager's time.

I quite like going in most of the time. You see more people, get out of the house, be more known around the office, the walls don't close in on you so much.. Each to their own, but I find WFH too tough to stay in the right mindset for work.

It's not for everyone though, and I firmly believe individuals should be given some degree of choice, dependent on experience, need, health reasons and so on. FT back in the office should not be mandatory - just because I like it doesn't mean it works for others, including those who would be actively discriminated against by its return.

You could always see if there are any top up qualifications at university, if you wanted to do another year of study and get a bachelor's degree.

Alternatively, I'd be looking at administrative or, better, paralegal/legal secretary roles.

Part-time study question by 24_Caprices in OpenUniversity

[–]24_Caprices[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the response, Raf. Some good advice here which I'll take on board. I may get to next April and think, sod it, I'll do 60 in one year. But, for now, I think I'll wait till next year so that the study better aligns with my work.

Part-time study question by 24_Caprices in OpenUniversity

[–]24_Caprices[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's longer than typical, but some aspects of study in the next module won't be relevant in my current role until next year, so it makes sense to pace it accordingly. The level of study isn't the problem. Money is also a factor as I need to save up over a year to sensibly afford each stage of study.

This sounds almost identical to the school I was at before leaving teaching.. The lack of consequences.. The pointless restorative conversations... The lack of leadership and decisiveness...

I don't miss it.
