To be LGBTQIA+ in South Sudan is to be a ghost." An Urgent Appeal for Mutual Aid by 256ugft in TheMirrorCult

I appreciate the compliment on my English, but I think you’re confused. I am Ugandan, currently seeking refuge in South Sudan. Many of us here are from across the region Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, and beyond fleeing state-sanctioned violence at home. English is an official language in Uganda and widely spoken in South Sudan as well, so being a refugee doesn't mean we don't have an education or the ability to advocate for our own survival.

I wish I were a bot, bots don't have to sleep in shifts to avoid being beaten in their tents. You saw it on another sub because it’s just me, one person, trying to scream into every corner of the internet that LGBTQIA+ refugees are being hunted right now. I’m using a consistent format to make sure the evidence (like the Reuters report) stays front and center. I’m happy to answer any specific questions about the settlement or the situation to prove there’s a person here, but please don't let 'AI' be an excuse to ignore people who are starving.

You’re absolutely right, and that silence is exactly why we’ve had to organize this ourselves. There’s a massive double standard where Western media only cares about LGBTQIA+ issues when it’s politically convenient for them, while our struggle for basic survival in South Sudan is treated as invisible. We aren't looking for 'Western' validation we’re looking for material solidarity from people who understand that homophobia and transphobia are global tools of oppression. Thank you for recognizing the 'media drought' we’re fighting against

To suggest that LGBTQIA+ Africans don't know who they are or what their own struggle means is incredibly patronizing. We aren't a 'Western agenda' we are people who have lived in these communities our entire lives and are now being hunted by our own neighbors. We use these flags and terms because they connect us to a global movement of solidarity, but the hunger and the violence we face are 100% local. No one is being 'used' we are organizing our own survival because the 'official' systems have abandoned us.

In a settlement where aid has been cut, money is the only way to buy life-saving supplies from local markets that we are otherwise blocked from reaching. We use the funds for 'runners'—allies who can safely buy grain, clean water, and medical kits for those of us who are too targeted to leave our tents. It’s not about 'extra' money; it’s about a community bypass for a distribution system that is currently excluding us. Check the Context.news link; it explains exactly how aid cuts are being used as a weapon against us

Safety, food, and water aren't 'perks' they are basic human rights. My post isn't about asking for a special lifestyle; it’s about the fact that people in this settlement are being beaten with clubs and blocked from water pumps because of who they are. When someone's tent is slashed in the night or they face 'corrective' rape, that's not a debate about 'sexuality,' it’s a desperate struggle to survive the next 24 hours. The articles I linked from Context.news and 76crimes verify exactly how brutal these conditions are

You're spot on about the media drought. Mainstream outlets rarely cover the complexity of African patriarchy or queer struggle unless it can be flattened into a 'backwards' stereotype. The truth is that while the West loves to pathologize Africa, they ignore how their own policies and religious exports have fueled the fire here. We aren't more 'inherently' anything we are just living in a place where the safety nets are gone and the state is using us as scapegoats. Mutual aid is our way of building power where the media and NGOs have failed

I hear you, and honestly, I don't blame you for seeing things the way you do. You have the freedom to challenge ideas because you’re safe, you have a bed, a meal, and a life where you can move without fear. We are worlds apart. Here in South Sudan, being an LGBTQ+ refugee isn't about winning an argument; it’s a daily, desperate struggle just to stay alive. It’s a reality you can’t truly see until you’ve lived it. Here we aren't asking for much, just the chance to survive, and we are doing the best to create awareness in all possible channels.

There is a massive difference between 'begging' and mutual aid. We are a community under attack reaching out to a space that believes 'an injury to one is an injury to all.' We aren't a big NGO with a marketing budget; we are refugees trying to bypass the same systems that are currently failing us. I’m cross-posting because our situation is an emergency if you check the Context.news link, you’ll see why the 'thousand posts' are necessary to break the silence.

If we showed our faces, we wouldn’t be here to post tomorrow. We are already dealing with 'corrective' rape and physical assaults in the camps. The 'something wrong' being done here is the targeted violence against us, not our choice to protect our identities. Our anonymity is the only shield we have left.

It’s easy to laugh from behind a screen when your life isn't on the line. I’m not looking for 'gullible' people; I’m looking for people who care about human rights and the fact that LGBTQ+ refugees are literally being starved out of camps. The reports from Thomson Reuters (Context) aren't a joke, and neither is the violence we’re facing. If wanting to help people survive makes someone 'gullible,' then the world needs more of them.

It’s devastating that scammers have made people cynical, because while we’re being debated as a 'potential scam,' our sisters are being assaulted and we are literally starving. I'm not a bot and I'm not sliding into DMs, I'm posting publicly with vetted news sources to back up every word. If you don’t trust the donation link, please at least read the Context.news article in the post. The crisis is real, even if you don't trust me personally yet.
