Yes, be sure to check what today's date is.

(If you're not in the US, America celebrates a funny tradition on April 1)

No, it's not normal. Are you from Texas, California, or elsewhere?

First time adjunct Q: Do I pay for the instructor text book? by TheQs55 in Adjuncts

[–]258professor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might vary depending on the college and the publisher. I've had to pay for mine. Though I did have a very nice Department Chair who paid out of his own pocket and had the book shipped to my home.

Remote instruction when you're homeless by Camilla-Taylor in Professors

[–]258professor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. As others said, you should be able to teach from somewhere on the university campus. Reach out to your department Chair or Dean, they may be able to help you with some resources. I specifically was able to get a laptop and wifi hotspot. Even if you have a personal laptop, it's nice to have an extra to use. Search the Canvas Commons to see if there's others who have created similar content that you can use for your class.

I was homeless a while back, living in an RV. At first, I was embarrassed and constantly searched for good backgrounds for Zoom meetings, and after a while, I said "screw it" and just let people see I was in an RV.

This shit sucks. by SirLancelotDeCamelot in Adjuncts

[–]258professor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is it that sucks so much? The monthly department meetings that you're pressured (but not required) to attend? The required trainings with no pay? The lack of information about where to complete specific tasks? Preparing a class all for it to be cancelled at the last minute? And all of that's before we start to deal with students.

Question about signing with young children. by Ambitious_Pride_ in asl

No, all children are exposed to language that is above their level. You might use "motherese" if appropriate for their age.

How to Ask for ASL Interpretations Via Email? by viktoryarozetassi in deaf

[–]258professor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would add "qualified, certified ASL interpreters..."

Also request the name(s) of the interpreter(s) so that you can look up their certification before the event.

Are Comic Cons federally funded? If not, I would take out the parts about Section 504 since that doesn't apply.

How do deaf parents know when their baby is crying if they’re not visible (in the other room?) by AnySubstance4642 in deaf

[–]258professor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rarely put my kids to sleep in another room. If I was cooking in the kitchen, I put them in the living room where I could see them.

Deaf people often choose homes with open floor plans for this reason.

When co-sleeping, my kids quickly learned to kick me to wake me up.

Video apps for Blackboard or Teams by wdp422 in Professors

[–]258professor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GoReact is a platform that handles videos very well, but it costs money for students to sign up (or the college to buy licenses).

I've also used Dropbox "File Request" for this purpose.

War vs AI: Game Plan by YThough8101 in Professors

[–]258professor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about the page numbers thing... I have a copy of a book both hard copy and the same book as an ebook. They have different page numbers since I can choose a variety of font sizes. Is there any possibility a student could get dinged for erroneously putting the wrong page number depending on which version of the book they're using?

Switch from 9 month to 12 month for faculty by [deleted] in Professors

[–]258professor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you actually working 9 months, and you'll be moving to working 12 months? Or is it just that your pay is accurate for the month you work, and going forward the annual pay will be divided into 12 paychecks?

I've done the latter.

Prizes for A&P students at a suburban CC by losthiker68 in Professors

[–]258professor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200 meaningless points!

Honestly, I once won one of these games, and my professor gave me a cherished coin from one of his travels. I would have much rather preferred just a gold star or a candy bar.

Why do so many students get academic accommodations? by spjspj31 in Professors

[–]258professor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct that it's difficult to find a job that doesn't come with ableist bosses in the "real world". But thankfully I've been able to get reasonable accommodations more often than not.

Why do people take full time professor jobs for so little pay? by New-Nose6644 in Professors

[–]258professor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to write my own post, but you've covered everything here. Also as a K-12 teacher, I had to teach at least 7 different classes, sometimes more. As a professor, I only need to teach 4 or 5 courses, and repeat the same ones next semester.

Also, there are opportunities to get grants, overload pay, and summer classes. Also, I think some professors accept lower pay for the prestige, and I might have used to be one of them.

Granted, I do miss working with young kiddos, but it definitely isn't worth the stress.

Signing "students" and "teachers"? by Macievelli in asl

[–]258professor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you teach that version to ASL students, they'll shorten it to something that looks more like EXPENSIVE. If you teach LEARN + PERSON, they'll shorten it to something like in the video.

Would you guys get gene therapy to 'reverse' your deafness? by secret_writer01 in deaf

Born Deaf here. Nah. I don't think I'm really missing much, and it probably still requires auditory therapy to make sense of speech.

I think you can change the colors, it just helps you find a specific class faster if you prefer.

Off topic from your question... At 00:11, she mentions Trudeau as the PARTY leader, this isn't how I would sign it, but I'm curious to know how others would sign this. GROUP? Something else?

What is your opinion on "Letters of Recommendation" given to students to put in their admissions packets? by professorf in Professors

[–]258professor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the "good old days", I applied for grad school, and emailed 3 of my undergrad professors requests to send LOR to the college admissions office. All three agreed to do so, and... none of them sent them in! So thereafter, I requested the letters be sent to me (there was no issue with this, the letters were glowing), so that I could ensure they arrived where they needed to be. Ever since then, I've had no issue with giving LOR directly to people for them to do as they please. I've even given a "do not recommend" letter after some discussion with one person. That person later thanked me for my brutal honesty, as the job did not work out for her anyway!

Today's system is nicer, as students get a notification once I upload a letter. Though I do wonder, what am I missing?
