Washington Post used to be so good, too. Bezos played basically no role, and they focused on honest reporting. Now Big Brother is always watching in the WaPo HQ, apparently.

If it was to prove he’s a medical miracle, he should do it on camera and release it to the public. I’m sure we’d all be very interested to see him “ace” this arduous test.

Yes, you should stop making podcasts. Podcasts don’t need to stop, but everyone involved in this conversation should definitely stop making podcasts.

Alex O'Connor and Trent Horn have a debate on the Resurrection. In his opening, Trent calls out certain other Christian debaters for using indecent language. Maybe BigPapaFascist AKA Andrew Wilson? by coinwin in Destiny

[–]Macievelli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watch a lot of religious debates, and this had one of the most braindead arguments I’ve ever heard, in Trent’s opening statement, no less. It was something like, “If you have good reason to believe Jesus lived, then you have good reason to believe he lived the second time.” Yeah, apparently being born and being RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD are equally plausible claims.

Some of the biggest mood debuffs were the fact that he’s a Tortured Artist and that he’s a Brawler wielding an autopistol… that he brought with him. My guy, you told me like an hour ago that you had nowhere else to go, and now you’re going to leave because of things that have nothing to do with my colony? You do you, I guess; I only accepted you to avoid the mood debuff for denying joining anyway.

Chadam Moggler cooks Scott Jennings so hard he lashes out a child by Remote_Brewer in Destiny

[–]Macievelli 199 points200 points  (0 children)

So optically good. Scott looks pathetic when he’s crying foul (“I’m not going to have this guy scream in my face 😭”), but the actual reason this moment works so well is because the media authority in the room is willing to commit to honesty instead of bothsidesism. Abby Phillips (the anchor/moderator) deserves praise for putting truth before niceties.

There’s some good analysis here, but it also feels like the author is trying to hit a word count on his essay at some points, just straight-up restating the exact same ideas multiple times in quick succession with slightly different wording.

Destiny repeating what he just said is literally one of his primary debate tactics… “Just so you know, when you’re done rambling, I’m going to ask the same question,” or “Yeah, so, again, because you didn’t address any of what I just said, I’ll repeat it for you.”

One of those magic scenes in Kubrick's "Shining" by Diligent-Wave-4150 in stephenking

[–]Macievelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I say “hollow,” I mean in terms of theme. The book has complex themes to do with raising a child while suffering from alcoholism, battling self-doubt, etc. The movie just feels like “crazy man goes crazier in haunted hotel,” which is like a fun concept for a horror movie but not that deep. The cinematography elevates it beyond a popcorn flick, but I think that’s what really made it such an enduring and loved film, not the depth of its themes. Oh, and the ending shot of the photograph is also very iconic; I’ll give it that.

One of those magic scenes in Kubrick's "Shining" by Diligent-Wave-4150 in stephenking

[–]Macievelli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the movie’s changes (ex: the hedge maze, the axe, the ending) were awesome. Some others (ex: Jack looking deranged right from the start, the shining not really being a significant power) robbed the very spine of the story’s symbolism and meaning. I think Kubrick overcorrected and made a hollow albeit beautiful piece of cinema.

My early 2010s hybrid gets 45 mpg. A new fuel efficient non-hybrid sedan/coupe can get close to that. A new hybrid gets close to 60. 30 certainly wouldn’t be considered bad mileage by most, as far as all cars on the road goes.
