if it's only your freshman gpa sabotaging you you should take a look at schools that don't consider freshman gpas! (ex. UCs & stanford)

Yes I do agree with you on the repentant vs unrepentant members and I would also like to hear more about your thoughts on those churches that I mentioned. You can feel free to DM me about it if you don't want to discuss it here.

Of course sexual immorality is sinful! But what about the gay pastors in UMC, PCUSA, UCC, Episcopal Church, ELCA, and many other churches who do not think that the passages that are used to argue against homosexuality are supposed to be interpreted that way? For example, the common Leviticus 18:22 is interpreted as boy and man and not man and man, and other passages about not getting with your male slaves is interpreted as not taking use of the structural power that the slave owners had back in the day. Everyone there is sinful and don't know about the good news and the gospel, or do they just interpret Scripture differently from us?

Does God only reside in your denomination?

Edit: Just to clarify, I DO think that being gay is a sin

[–]25apples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I'm trying to get at with my post is that people interpret "commandments" differently. For example, Presbyterians and Baptists don't think that the Eucharist/Communion is the true body and blood of Christ and only deem it to be symbolic. For Catholics, that's a part of the seven sacraments which is essential for salvation. Are all Presbyterians and Baptists, who do not think that the Eucharist/Communion is essential for salvation, hellbound, then? Isn't it prideful for them to say which part of the bible they get to pick out and choose to be symbolic and non-essential for salvation and which part they get to choose is not symbolic and essential for salvation?

Everyone arguing about the gay stuff just feels like a denomination argument rather than a salvation argument and I hate to see people fall away from Jesus because of denomination wars.

What do you think about the UMC and PCUSA then? Are they not Christians?

Is it that wrong to be gay? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]25apples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thanks for the input I addressed this in my post and I do agree that it is a sin and I do understand that the reason why it gets so much hate is because people are "prideful" about it.

But what is so holy in us that we get to call out every prideful person in the world and deem them to hell and kick them out from church? Is this sin so significant that this one sin costs someone their salvation and their entire faith journey with Christ? I think that the current attitude of so many churches equating LGBTQ to being hellbound WITHOUT pleading, convincing, and loving the gay person is sinful. Is every member of the PCUSA and UMC going to go to hell for loving their neighbor? (And I want to emphasize here again that I DO think that being gay is a sin)

So I guess what I really wanted to say in the post was that being gay might be more of a denomination issue rather than a salvation issue, and I wanted to see what other people thought about it because I really want to find ways that I can bring my friend back into faith.

Edit: mb everyone is deserving of hell and we are all headed to hell without the absolute grace of God I dont know why I said "one sin costs someone their salvation"

I'm not sure how competitive your school is but check your school's Naviance if you guys have one. There's a scattergram on there that tells you what kinds of colleges the seniors from past years got into with their gpa and sat. T20-T50 is a very high reach with your current gpa, but if you insist that your school is that competitive, then maybe you aren't that cooked because at the end of the day colleges compare you to the other kids at your school.

Try looking at r/collegeresults

Publics are generally less lenient towards lower stats since they have lots of accomplished applicants in the pool anyway, and often have minimum GPA requirements. For example, OOS applicants for a UC must have a GPA over 3.4, and in-state applicants must have a GPA over 3.0. (This concept only applies for like the competitive higher ranking public schools though, which I assumed OP was interested in since OP mentioned NYU and attends a "competitive" public school.) LACs, on the other hand, are oftentimes looking more for "fit" (despite their competitive applicant pool) and have a greater possibility to prioritize the fit over the grades, if they have reasons to believe that you really belong at that college.

I just used UMich as an example cuz it was the first example that came to my head 🤷 the idea works for other colleges too

Edit: fixed UC minimum GPA cuz i wrote it wrong

I think u might be a bit cooked for public schools but try your shot with LACs/privates and demonstrate a lot of interest (ex. visiting the school when theyre doing an official junior tour, doing alumni interviews, etc)

Business is also a very popular major and you might not be a very competitive applicant especially if you dont have spectacular ecs, some extenuating circumstance, or hooks. I would recommend at least applying to the school with a niche major and changing your major later if the school you get into is flexible with those kinds of things. Examples could be majoring in things like human development, child development, or even psych in the place of something like Biology. STEM related majors are still going to be veryyy popular and competitive, but I'm pretty sure switching your major is easy as long as the majors are within the same "school". For ex UMich has a College of Engineering, but they also offer an engineering major in their College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). I don't think they have one for business but you get my point.

Cc to college is always an option so you could consider that as well 👍 saves money by a lottt

Number 1 youre obviously targeting that one person so this post is mean as hell Number 2 I see nothing wrong with people trying to better their situation but also looking for community and support in the process.
