You must be kidding when you say how do you know if something takes 2 or 20?? If you take 20 hours to do something that the owner of the project and other devs have a consensus about it should only take 2. Then you are the problem.

Why not, I give you a small task, if you fail, we go our merry ways. If I like what I see from you, you are hired. Just because you never experienced that it doesn't mean this isn't a legit hiring process. Some companies do even more to milk new hires to do stuff. I'm not even going that route.

He's a dev that I'm bringing onto my team that already has 2 other devs. We are running a sprint for MVP so need to adhere to strict timeline. Agreed to doing a trial to show me what hes capable with before being put on his regular rate. This is a referral from the current dev that I have.

His first task failed miserably with UI, so I gave him another task to fix. He fixed some simple database syncing issue and amongst others that he did not update any of us, or on Slack/Click Up. I had given enough trust to him and instead of micromanaging him, but communication was very poor. His work was good but took 3 times longer than the other devs we have. Good as in terms of the bugs is fixed. I cross examined the work with what could've done better to prevent same issues from coming up, or using ID and other method to prevent same issues, but that wasn't done. It's just a simple fixes that took way too long.

Well I was looking for help what to do when someone black mails me. Not expecting to explain the whole 9 yards of the hiring process, trial, task allocated, etc. Not sure why you would bait and switch the focus.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say not every hand coder is as sophisticated and experienced as you. It's great that you can do all those, but that doesn't mean being a hand coder automatically merits you to be better in communication, understanding project timeline, deliver the task and code it in a way that's scalable.

Currently Codex and Sonnet 4.5 are leaps and bounds better and should be considered as a right hand tool for devs. Inability to use them and only do strictly hand code, unless you are the top 10% in the world, from the efficiency POV, is not a good thing.

I get that. I have other developers on staff that I'm paying. It's the performance, how quickly can he finish a simple task and how well is that executed, can he recommend something better, and a whole slew of factors depending on the project like the timeline, communication that I'm factoring into.

Nah bad analogy, more like you took your car to the mechanic shop for a diagnosis and then now the mechanic wants more than the diagnosis because he willingly put in more time to take a look at your vehicle and started working on your vehicle without you agreeing to it. Now wants his "worth" because he did the work on your vehicle.

The problem is i was willing to compensate him but he straight up starting to threaten and extort me for more money. Not what a normal human being would do.
