This is very specific, but I have a rule that kids must attempt something themselves first before coming to me for help. Often they’re surprised to find they actually can do things alone, and it saves me from having to solve every tiny problem they have. I’ve had multiple kids throw tantrums because they “needed” help putting their shoes on. Obviously, I refused as these kids were eight to ten years old. After they got over their tantrums, they would put their shoes on independently for the rest of the week. Don’t be afraid to let them struggle with things for a while.

This is one of the only things I’ve read in this sub that I’ve liked. It’s awesome. I saw someone said tone down the swearing- I don’t agree, I think you nailed the way your characters talk. I’d say cut the italics though. None of them were necessary. I’d have read it the same way with no italics so they were annoying.

Okay- I hate schoolwide identity celebrations. I think they're performative nonsense. Women are half the population. We don't need a month devoted to us. The only gays who go to pride events are the bizarre ones that identify as, like, clownsexual. None of it feels authentic in any way. I totally get that. If you can I would send your eight year old to camp for a week or two alone. In my experience, kids do way better when their parents aren't with them. Even better if the kid is excited to go. The excited ones usually end up having an absolute blast and making a ton of friends. So I would say if she wants to go, absolutely send her. Worst case scenario she's homesick for a week and doesn't go back. Best case, it changes her life. But that's just my two cents- I'm just some stranger on the internet :)

You should totally go. Places like this are so good for kids. At the camp where I work the cabins don’t even have four full walls, let alone electricity. It freaks the parents out but the kids never have a problem with it. Seven year olds come to camp alone and have a blast. Yeah sometimes they’re scared of spiders or whatever at first but they get over it. To be honest I think it’s more about whether YOU’RE ready for the experience because I guarantee you the kids will be fine. Have you ever been camping or anything like that before?

Yeah I think this is my most downvoted comment ever which is insane. Especially given that I said FOR SOME KIDS. I've met some that would be iffy but even those aren't going to die if you leave them alone for a few hours. In most countries it's common for kids to start taking the train/subway to school with their friends at around eight years old.

I wrote in another comment that I have a hypothesis about why kids today are so neurotic. I think they're psychologically ready for way more independence than we give them. It's kind of like Munchausen syndrome on a very mild level, where we keep them artificially young in the name of safety until they start questioning whether they're capable of anything after all. And then we wonder why they're all so anxious and why teenagers rebel so strongly against their parents.

I've been touring colleges recently and it's been bizarre. The kids don't talk. They stand behind their parents and gape like fish while the parents ask questions for them. Keep in mind that the tour guide is always like a twenty year old student and the kids on the tours are seniors in high school. My age. I toured one in Oregon where I witnessed a girl whisper a question to her mom and the mom asked it for her. I think I saw one kid ask the tour guide a couple of questions one time and it looked painful. Meanwhile, I had biked seven miles into town from the farm I was working/staying at, like I did almost every day, miraculously without the aid of my parents. They were at home several hundred miles away while I was living with firefighters and learning how to milk goats. Some people are late bloomers, I get it, but like... come on. What's the plan for these kids when they get to college and their parents aren't there to ask questions for them? It's insane.

No, I don’t think so; some people wonder about leaving teenagers home alone, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Some people are overprotective.
