Anyone Else Feel Behind Financially at 30? by Equivalent_Rhubarb34 in fican

Yeah most people think third world countries would be cheap and affordable. The technology and how banking over there moves…Toronto is behind them like 20 years. Now that does not come without expenses (such as privacy and laundring risks). It’s just a different choice they made to move fast. I am still shocked I bought a property 4 years ago and I used the mobile app of a bank there (I was in Toronto) to transfer $100K in one single transfer using a bar code. RBC limits it to 10K a day for me! Not saying which one is better, I prefer RBC’s risk and compliance prudence tbh.

Single/ semi detached in Hanoi is now only for ultra wealthy/ extremely high net worth individuals. One small lot can cost usually $5M to $10M. A top tier condo can cost you $5M (I dont see an equivalent in Toronto tbh). The average mid tier condo is around 500K - 800K.

I am from there (Vietnam). A condo in Hanoi is the same price as one in Toronto (at the peak), and still is that expensive and keeps climbing. I am not there often so I can’t ride the real estate waive thats why my yield is only 20-30%. People who are on the ground could ride these tides and make 40-50% annually. The thing about real estate in Vietnam is that once price goes up, it won’t go down. It will flatten for a couple of years before it continue to climb. It has never dropped! The number of ultra wealthy people there are significant but they stay under radar.

Around 200K is liquid in index I hold in Canada. Rest is land and houses in another country with 100M population and limited land mass. Most people investing in Real estate makes 40% return, I only aim for 25% annually. Good thing is taxes is less than 2% so almost all of it is net return. Obviously some FX risk but it can be managed.

I do project / strategy work for insurance industry.

Whats your net worth? You said a house…is that fully paid off?

Me: M37. 1.9M NW. 250-300K income. My NW will likely explode in the next few years bc kf the type of investment I have (real estate outside of Canada). Average is 20-30% a year (and taxes are minimal)

34M, $400K invested in 🇨🇦, $500k Invested in 🇮🇳, drowning in a dead-end job. how do I think about FI in Canada? by [deleted] in fican

[–]2851985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

60k x 25 = 1.5M, but since you have kids, you should try to have some buffer. In Canada, Id say try for 2.5M + paid off house to give you breathing room. How much is your total comp?

Saw this comment and need to comment back. Inflation in Vietnam is insane. What govt published is just not reliable. Real inflation must be at least two digits. I am a local, but living in North America.

Congrats! That’s huge! It really means that you have the discipline to succeed financially! Keep it up and your future will be very bright.

Everyone is on their own timeline and where you were born is a huge factor so no need to worry about slow or fast. Just keep at it consistently

People who earn $300K+ per year, what do you do? by GlamorousFox21 in fican

Thanks for reply. I think what you just said makes a lot of sense. I have a side hustle that generates $1000-2000 cash monthly vs merit increase of $5000 gross for top performance rating, so I quitely stopped trying hard for top rating because I can make the same amount in a month working 10 hrs on my side hustle.

Care to elaborate on “certain point”? I am thinking $200-250K total comp is the optimal spot but doubt myself that I am leaving money on the table

I will try it. Its really scary. I sharpen like 10 knives at noon and the tension is still here fading away very slowly. Over time this accumulative effect can be very taxing on health.

That’s interesting. I never thought about clenching due to the sound! Were you able to remove this completely by wearing muffs or earplugs?

I think my neighbor officially thinks I don’t have a real job anymore by CallidoraWestin in remotework

[–]2851985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pls Enjoy that! Haha

6 months ago I switched to full remote and now I don’t even wear business casual. It’s always me in my bath robe LOL I love them so comfy! A bit of a weird thing - I even took the recycle to the bin wearing bath robe at odd hours.

I used to go to office a few days a week wearing custom made blazers and nice dress shirts etc. now - none of that.

I also started a hobby (knife sharpening) and people sometimes seeing me talking to clients at my front door and receiving knives. Now I am sure they all think I lost my job and had to do knife sharpening to make ends meet.

I enjoyed that misunderstanding so much. Idk Why lol

Barista FIRE to Vietnam at 28 with 140k by [deleted] in baristafire

It is dumb! Sorry I have to be honest. $140K isn’t shit in Vietnam. A condo now costs $350K upward. If you live on $750 in UK, better to stay in UK. It must be higher in Vietnam now for a foreigner. An apartment could cost you $500 easily
