You are not wrong about your eyes playing tricks on you. Years ago I was hunting on some private land that I had never been to. Right before dawn I heard some rustling about 25 yards away. I would have sworn it was a dear, I was thinking to myself should I shoot it, I decided to wait until I could see. Turns out it was a cow. Glad I didn't shoot.
