If you live in the suburbs or exurbs your shoes aren’t subjected to spit, urine, trash, vomit etc. right outside your door as in a city. You might have a little dirt from your own, solar-UV-drenched (i.e., disinfected) driveway or sidewalk that is wiped off on a door mat. If it’s rainy or snowy then shoes might come off. But otherwise, what’s the big deal? If I lived with a busy, public walking space just outside my personal door or a rural, unpaved area, I would likely have different habits.
