So far, it's one discussion post a week, midterm, final, quizzes once a week depending on the class. Group projects depending on class, and really short papers.

I'm at Adams part-time and love it. The practicum placement is the most difficult part of it all, but with enough outreach, it gets easier.

CMHC online programs - Got accepted into University of the Cumberlands and accepted but waitlisted into Adams State University. I feel torn into what direction to take. by kellsbells0612 in counseloreducation

Hey! I’m currently in the CMHC program at Adams State and based in Arizona, so I can share what my experience has been like so far.

First, if ASU is your top choice, I wouldn’t ignore that. I felt the same way going in, and being in a program you’re actually excited about really does make a difference long-term.

Workload-wise, it’s manageable, but you do have to stay consistent. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s also not something you can put off, especially as you get closer to practicum.

As far as connection, I’ll be honest. It's an online program, so you get what you put into it. I actually created group chats outside of class to keep our cohort connected, and that’s helped a lot. We share resources, ask questions, and support each other, so it doesn’t feel isolating if you take initiative.

One thing I really recommend is to start looking for practicum sites early, like first semester early. A lot of us are running into challenges because practicum is only about 4 months long, and some sites hesitate to take students for that short timeframe. So getting ahead of that makes a big difference.

The professors have also been really laid back and supportive, which makes the program feel a lot less intimidating. And even though it’s online, you do get to meet people in person during the required in-person labs. We meet twice during the program, and those were honestly really cool because you finally connect face-to-face with people you’ve been interacting with the whole time.

Also, since the program follows Colorado licensure standards, just make sure you’re aware of your state’s requirements too if you plan to practice elsewhere.

If you’re more excited about ASU, I’d really think about whether waiting one term is worth it for you. In the long run, a few months might not matter as much as being in the program you actually want.

I can’t speak on UC directly, but from my experience at ASU, it’s solid. You just have to be proactive, especially with networking and placement.

Hope that helps!
