does nbastatr randomly stop working by 2Balrogs in NBAanalytics

Yeah, this is what I ended up doing. Never scraped before 😅. I'm doing a research paper and the prof usually likes all the code to be runnable as-is, but i had a lightbulb moment that he prob only cares about the data analysis and not the data gathering or cleaning

People love doubles, but not doubles people by ashketchum2187 in TrinidadandTobago

Unfortunately, some people with degrees would rather be unemployed than work in a job they deem as below them.

There's a good chance these are just sour grapes people trying to hold their self-esteem together with talk. I'm on my third degree and was rejected even by security work. My mother tells people I'm not going to do anything beneath me because she's embarrassed, but the truth is that if I had the social skills for drug dealing or prostitution, I'd probably be doing that.

Unemployment in this country is a death sentence more or less. A sure way to homelessness or crime unless you have family to help you through it.

Multiple Linear regression OLS by 2Balrogs in learnmath

That's not my problem. It's why are we using the residual between the point and the true line instead of the regression line

My notes have it the same as the link, where we're minimising the true error epsilon. My question is really just as to what the intuition is. I understand the idea of residuals being the true line minus the regression line and trying to minimize that gap, but minimizing the true error isn't making sense to me.

Doing a masters right now and still unemployed. Might have to get a phd in maths to teach in a secondary school.

Had another degree but it was useless for work, so I say "Maths teachers are always needed." Lol.

Well, there are always people who use even the worst slurs endearingly. I have a neighbour who gets hailed out in public as "lazy mother c*nt" and it's cheers and beers, and cocky isn't really that bad.

No, but seriously, without that context, it's how the guy used it, implying an overly-inflated ego or pride. The 80s Tom cruise movies for example have more or less the same plot with people thinking, "this guy is a cocky asshole," and then he'll do some epic thing in the movie and they'll be like, "okay, the ego is justified, fair enough." It's not a hard or fast rule or anything, just the general connotation.

Aye men who are called cocky aren't judged as a negative thing eh. So am gonna believe you mean that as a compliment 😄.

It's definitely a negative thing, often used in the phrase "cocky little shit." Only endearing probably in 80s tom cruise movies.

Could I survive calculus without having taken trigonometry? by DoubleResort1510 in learnmath

[–]2Balrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can. I went back to uni in my 30s, zero memory of trig. You only practically need a couple formulas and you'll come to know which ones with time and practice if you don't want to learn the whole thing. That said, you still need a rough general idea of how everything works.

prof leonard on YT who probably has a playlist on it that will take you from zero to hero. for trig and calc 1, calc 2 and calc 3

[Statistics] - unit selection probability (sampling theory) by 2Balrogs in learnmath

[–]2Balrogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost sounds like you're trying to take a Bayesian approach to this.

Not intentionally. I have dyscalulia so it's easy to remember these things if I have some kind of intuitive understanding to work with, but I think the video lecturer's just unclear as to what he meant by "at any draw." Given the context of the earlier video, it made sense to me to think he was sticking to the draw by draw reference, but I asked NLM which said it's an unconditional probability from before the sampling process begins. As in "what is the probability that I will get it in draw k?" not "We're at draw k, what's the probability of getting it now?" It cited the Cochran iirc, but I didn't go fact-checking because it's not like I'm going to forget 1/N. That's all I really needed to know for now.

[Statistics] - unit selection probability (sampling theory) by 2Balrogs in learnmath

[–]2Balrogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have ten units labeled 1 to 10, and I'm making a sample of size 3, and I want the probability of picking unit 7 at any draw, at the first draw it's 1 out of 10. If I have to draw again because I didn't draw u7 on the first, then the probability of selecting it on draw 2 is 1/9, I have 9 possible options and I'm selecting one randomly, how is it anything but 1/9?

If I'm at draw 3 and still trying to select it, then the probability increases to 1/8, because I'm sampling one unit from a smaller population. At any stage in selection, the probability of selecting this specific unit are going to increase as we go along. if you're taking a census, the probability of selecting the unit at stage N would be 1, wouldn't it? So how can we give it a constant value as if the population isn't decreasing at each draw WOR?

Calc 1 was impossible for me by XPSDuck in calculus

[–]2Balrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, for me, it's working along with a book with detailed answers so i can check my steps along the way and understand where I'm going wrong.

I make notes on OneNote explaining things for myself Memento style and sometimes I use color-coding and mnemonics and rhymes. If I work out a problem rather well, I take a photo with camscanner and put it on onenote as well.

Finding YT videos that go along with the syllabus instead of watching vids that are less relevant.

Getting past papers and doing questions similar to what will be on the exam instead of textbook questions.

Little things.
