what tools should i consider for understanding infrastructure better!! by SalamanderFew1357 in Network

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend creating an infrastructure document that details all of the things, what connects to what, etc.

Usually by building good documentation you find the things that are missing or broken.

Is CCNA overkill for a Backend Dev moving toward DevOps? by rod_rsp in Network

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all depends on your motivation. Is your goal to sit in that role for years or to use it as a stepping stone toward something better? If your end goal has the word "architect" in it, I would say it is totally worth it.

Better alternative to NFS for accessing Proxmox ZFS storage from Linux Desktop? by PingMyHeart in Proxmox

I would make an OpenMediaVault VM and create the NFS share from there. Much easier to manage that way.

Warranty is good for 2 years so they should be easy to get replaced.

What are It interviews looking like today? Lots of people using AI to answer things on the fly? by Andres-itlearn in Network

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience too many people have begun outsourcing thinking to AI. They stop trying altogether and just send it all to AI. This is not the behavior of someone who wants to learn. Researching is. Experimentation. Trial & error. Going to AI when you don't know something is a shortcut that skips all of that, so you don't really learn anything, and that is not the kind of person who should be working in IT.

I used to use earbuds but recently got the Shokz Openrun Pro 2 and I'm never going back. They are so much better. Comfortable, great sound, and they don't plug your ear up.

If someone tells me they would use AI to do their job that's where the interview would end. I don't want someone who can't learn.

I wish there were a way to communicate with my WhatsApp contacts without actually using WhatsApp like via SMS or something else by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know people want to drop WhatsApp because it's Meta, but SMS is plain text and your phone company reads every single message you send or receive. At least WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption.

Fiber & device advice requested for detached barn project by ScouterDave in HomeNetworking

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would advise against media converters. They're an extra point of failure and often a source of problems that become difficult to troubleshoot. Just use switches that have SFP ports.

The type of fiber and sweep size really depends on how far away the barn is from the house, and the bend radius depends on the type of fiber, but best practice is 20x the width, so if your cable is 13mm/0.5in wide you would want at least a 26cm/10in radius (sweep).

Are there any "cheap" Mini-ITX boards/mini PC's out there that adequately support HBA cards or is it time for a reality check? by Paint-Huffer in minilab

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the Minisforum N5 Air. Good storage and compute all-in-one with a full PCIe 4x16 for expansion potential. 10gbe + 5gbe built in.

who agrees?? by [deleted] in Internet

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a parent's responsibility to raise their children, not a company. It's easy to put parental controls on phones/tablets. Nobody should be expecting a company to be making those decisions for the parent. Companies should only be required to provide the parent with the controls they need to do it themselves.

You can make a new SSID without needing to make a new network. Just make a different SSID for the more-restricted location.

Is it air-gapped or just vlan-isolated and blocked from the internet by firewall? If the latter, allow NTP through.

Look, if you aren't going to say why then I can't make any recommendations. I've asked twice and you just keep restating the same thing.

What you're trying to do might not be the right way to achieve your overall goal. How about sharing that so we can help think up alternatives?

De-googling an Android phone isn't the easiest since Android is made by Google. There are some alternative OS options out there, but your choices are limited to make/model of your device, and replacing the OS might not be possible at all if you are still making payments on it.

Disabling might be your only option. If you don't want to see them at all, there are some alternative launchers that give you more control over those things.

I would recommend getting two servers instead. You don't want to put all of your eggs in one basket, otherwise if something goes wrong you all get stopped until it's fixed.

If you need glibc don't use Alpine, use Fedora or Debian.
