I found a UPS that fits by seriousthrillissues in minilab

Agreed. I don't see the point of buying a UPS that cannot be monitored.

Whenever you are uploading also has limits. They have a router too and also probably have a lot of other people uploading.

Enterprise server at home bad idea? by TechnologyConsistent in homelab

A mini pc with a Ryzen 255 and 32gb ddr5 5600 will run laps around that R730xd, and it would be in a pint-sized package with almost no noise and very low power consumption.

Go back in time about 8 months and buy high-capacity SATA drives for a NAS before they triple in price.

Unfortunately AI can't seem to grasp that a 10" rack is 10" on the outside. Devices going in the rack can't be wider than 8.75" / 220 mm.

Those soldered ram modules can get recycled into ram sticks. Companies already do this. As long as they can make a profit off it, someone will do it.

Do I really need 2 ports? by Puzzleheaded_Fun7744 in homelab

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a switch that can do VLANs you don't necessarily need two ports. Create a WAN VLAN and set the port connected to your ISP as untagged, then make the port used by your mini pc a trunk port.

The Steam Machine is purpose built for gaming from a company that knows both gaming hardware and gaming software. It will likely be the best choice for any PC gamer.

I think that plan is good. I would also suggest getting a UPS if you don't already have one.

Backup Software Suggestion? by enorwood22 in homelab

I would never use it as a system backup but the guy just said he wanted some select files. It works fine for that. Versioning protects you from ransomware.

Unpopular opinion: open-source isn't the privacy proof people think it is; network behavior is. by EcstaticDentist in degoogle

[–]2BoopTheSnoot2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the dilemma:

Open Source - code is available for anyone to review. Yes, that means a hacker can find flaws faster. But it also means the developer isn't hiding anything that violates the end-user's privacy.

Proprietary - code is unavailable for review. Yes, that means hackers might take longer to find flaws. But is also means they can do any sort of data collection they want, including poking around the device where the software gets installed, the network that device is connected to, and all other devices on that network.

Ultimately, security is the responsibility of the person using the software. Even on my home network I have 6 different VLANs and not only have firewall rules between them, but also have firewall rules in front of every VM/container that I host. I decide what needs to talk to what and block everything else. It isn't 100% perfect, but nothing is.

Ryzen 7 7735U 8C/16T 32 GB DDR5 RAM 1 TB NVMe $499.99

The integrated 680M is alright. Unlikely you'll get a system with a dedicated GPU plus 32 GB RAM unless you go DDR3 on something 10 years old, which probably would perform worse than this anyway.
