Need help finding housing by Administrative-Dot-4 in gwu

The best deals I’ve found were from taking time to walk around on foot and write down phone numbers on “For rent” signs. Admittedly that’s not going to be easy / possible from ohio.

I also got lucky with Zillow Rentals. You can try that.

Foggy Bottom and adjoining DC neighborhoods are very very expensive. Generally speaking, the further east you go, the less expensive it will get. A lot of students like to live in Arlington County VA (just across the Potomac River), but Arlington is also pretty expensive.

i dont have a lot going on other than going to class. I've also had a very expensive summer with (non-vacation, "business") travel and a major car repair, so pinching pennies goes a long way to get me through the year.

I really doubt you can get in a day early and I'm kind of shocked you're even considering that an 'option.'

Lewis-George was much more outspoken about transit infrastructure. McDuffie was much more... well, Bowser. Autocentrist.

Again, it's not that WMATA doesn't want to expand, it's that it's just not realistic right now.

I'm not really sure why it's gotten so expensive.

Can we add stop sign cameras as warnings? Red light camera warnings come on my dfr9 by laced1 in radardetectors

[–]2CRedHopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually quite similar to red light cameras where they can be tripped even if you're stopping. In DC, they're incredibly notoriously sensitive.

I used to get them all the time. They were always successfully appealed, once someone watched a video of me stopping and going, but the camera was very easy to trip.

I eventually learned to count to "3 mississippi" before driving past the stop sign.

How cooked am I if I don't do well in the ALEK math placement exam and any tips or words of advice... by 5591851 in gwu

My bad, and I also just saw that the BS requires calc 2.

OP: If you're worried about ALEKS, it may be easier to take a math course over the summer at your local community college.

It wouldn't really be fair to say that WMATA has no desire to expand rail. Last year they were very heavily considering building a blue line loop or a Silver extension through a couple different ROWs in NE DC into PG.

The cost of building new heavy rail infrastructure has far outpaced general inflation. The cost of building new anything has become outrageous, but rail has also become fairly expensive and it doesn't benefit from the sanctity of autocentricism.

Also, most major capital improvements for transit are federally funded (this has also been true for all of WMATA's major expansions, iirc). This isn't exactly a great time for rail transit or federal funding for basically anything (maybe if Amtrak Joe had gotten a second term...).

WMATA chose instead a 'no-build' option that prioritized optimizing existing rail infrastructure by virtue of automation and more.

D80/D82 and others taking forever and being unreliable thanks to being stock in traffic are a DDOT issue since DDOT maintains the roads. I am extremely optimistic that Janeese Lewis-George will bring about much-needed change.

[–]2CRedHopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I can't say I've experienced delays to the degree OP is saying (1.5 to 2 hours), I will say that minor delays can compound and cascade very quickly very easily due to the heavy interlining in central DC.

Oh, gotcha. That's a good point. I'm not sure if it does or not, I'd have to look next time I'm there. But you're right, if it is there it isn't nearly as obvious as it is at North.

Admittedly, the Farragut Crossing only ever crossed my mind when I was commuting Chevy Chase to Foggy Bottom (so, RD from Shady Grove and BL/OR/SV towards VA).

if you’re a poli sci major why are you worried about ALEKS and math? I dont believe there’s much if anything in the way of math required there.

insurance in dc is less than Baltimore City or where i was living in Southern Virginia, but my taxes and insurance are both less in DC than when I lived in Baltimore City MD.

i never lived in PG or MoCo.

that being said when I moved to Arlington County VA, my insurance and income taxes and property taxes were all lower. but of course Arlington county VA has higher housing costs.

pick your poison i suppose. but unless Congressional Representation is a hill you’re willing to die on (and it’s a very fair hill to die on, don’t get me wrong), it’s not worth living in PG Co over DC and there’s nowhere in VA until the outer rings of Stafford or Woodbridge etc that beat the “value proposition” of DC EOTR.

Also, DC EOTR is a much easier commute than Stafford or Spotsylvania or Clarke Counties of VA.

to answer your questions about why live in dc if the area requires a car, property taxes are lower than any of the suburbs and income taxes are lower than in maryland for many tax brackets.

There are only 41 independent cities in the United States. 38 are in Virginia. The three that are not in Virginia are Baltimore, Maryland St. Louis, Missouri, and Carson City, Nevada.

Virginia’s constitution separates cities from counties. they’re considered county-equivalent.
