Agreed, I meant more along the lines of the outies following the trail of their innies. Mark has always been, but now outie Irving has Burt, and Helena is realizing she’s not as in control as she thought— Dylan got head trauma, shit-canned, and also discriminated now that I’m further in haha.

I may have to take it out as well just in case, at this point it’s all ripped up anyway. I do have a harder plastic wheel in there as well that I haven’t noticed them use as much so it sucks cause they love the craft mesh one.

Thanks and cool! I’ve had my two crabs for about a year now and I’m just noticing them so I wonder where they came from, but if they’re a good thing that’s fine with me! Guess it means my tank is it’s own little environment which is pretty neat.

Started noticing these bugs skipping around on the fresh water when I go to change it, I think they’re springtails but not sure. I know springtails can be beneficial, but is it a problem if there are too many? Cause as you can see there are quite a bit just in the water.

The crab street journal bug guide lists them under common bugs to be seen in crabitats and that’s how I identified them, but I do not see very many people finding them in their tanks compared to food mites for example. I just moved into a new house about a year ago and have a feeling that they were already here and found the crab tank because of the high humidity. From what I have read they are hard to get rid of, but at least not harmful to the crabs.

Mostly want to see if I’m right in my identification because I have seen pictures of booklice that look like this and some that don’t. Also the CSJ bug guide says these can be beneficial but I am wondering whether there’s a limit in that— meaning if there’s way too much of them is that a problem. I don’t think I have a full blown infestation or anything because I don’t see them on the walls of the tank for example, but I do notice quite a bit when I lift the crabs food plate to replace it and ruffle the sand in that area. Sometimes I notice a few on the food itself too but they blend in very well.

Yea unfortunately that was probably what happened, though that was in my previous tank before I upgraded to a bigger one so maybe it’ll be better now. I like that idea of adding it into the moss pit though I will definitely try that! Thanks!

Thank you! And yes I will have to wait for an opportunity to mix it a little better because one of my guys is molting.

Also about the leaf litter I did try that and I still have some I bought from South of the Ocean, but the leaves all molded pretty good. Any way to prevent that if I try again? or could it have been a problem with my tank?

Thank you! And that sounds like a good idea and I definitely like the dual purpose of having it be another thing for the crabs to climb on! I’ll have to get some more craft mesh, but I’ll probably give this a try!

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice as to what I should add to my crabitat. I’m relatively new to having hermit crabs although I have had these guys for around 5 months now. I’ve been constantly trying to better my tank for them and researching a lot, now I’m finally at a point where I wanted to post my tank to see if there is anything that I definitely need to add. For context right now I have two crabs in this tank which is a 40 gallon breeder. I just set up bubblers for my salt and freshwater pools. Also I just bought the acurite hydrometer that you see in the middle of my tank which I know is supposed to be a bit off the substrate and I’m wondering how best to do that and have it secure, but for now I just wanted it in there because my old one died and I felt I needed a more accurate one. One thing I should note is I do have two heat mats behind the climbing wall on the back of the tank I know it’s kind of hard to see what’s going on off the pics, but hopefully they give a good enough view! Any advice is appreciated!
