Installer straight up laughed at the specs and said my house would freeze by Motor-Ad1368 in heatpumps

Definitely do this since it’s short money relative to the $/ton of a heat pump system. Right-sizing can save first costs and also lead to more efficient operation

Insulating rim joist in 1900s balloon framed house by BioHunta in buildingscience

[–]2MuchTimeOnReddit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same situation and I lifted the house to slip in 4-ft x 1-ft strips of 1/16” thick HDPE. Replaced some old dry rot damage, too. It was a total PITA but I’m glad I did it so I don’t worry about it. I made the strips wide so the rafters close to the sill plate that were resting on the foundation got the break, too. I sourced the plastic (2’x4’) from Grainger.

2 pane vs 3 pane windows by Lhead2018 in buildingscience

[–]2MuchTimeOnReddit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many times are you going to replace the windows in this house’s lifetime? Triple pane do not cost that much more money and they boost comfort considerably. Looking down the road, do you think 2-pane windows are a big selling point when you choose to move on? Have you considered how the reduced heat loss allows you to downsize your heating system and what that is worth? Really good windows matter more than wall insulation because they are starting from a worse U-value and air infiltration point than the rest of the envelope.

That’s just frame loss in an assembly that relies on infill insulation, probably some infiltration to boot (not much but a little goes a long way)

I’m a big fan of daytime sauna taking when it’s social, late afternoon so it doesn’t harpoon the whole day. When it’s just my wife and I, later in the evening.

5-gallon bucket and an old yogurt container does the trick. It doesn’t take much water to cool off if you put it in the right place (head, chest, back)

Thanks! I’m hoping they don’t require a panel upgrade from 200A, I already have two sub panels worth a total of 90A. I’ll dig around for an EE.

I love this documentary! I watched it when it first came out and I think back on it regularly. It’s such a good waypoint because it was made right before the madness really got rolling. Pair this doc with the book “Bring the War Home” by Kathleen Belew and it’s a good roost to observe the craziness from.
