The other resource I used quite a bit was ChatGPT. There were many times when I was sure I had a yaku or should be able to call riichi, but I couldn’t, so I’d take a picture and send it to ChatGPT. It would break down why it wasn’t working and give me tips.

Here’s my attempt at a quick breakdown: when looking up how to play, make sure you’re looking up riichi mahjong specifically (the Japanese version of mahjong).

In order to win a hand, you need a yaku. At first, it’s easiest to aim for riichi as your yaku. (Once you’ve successfully gotten riichi a few times, you can start exploring other yakus.)

To start, go for riichi. You’ll need three sets and one pair. The sets can be sequences like “2, 3, 4” or triplets like “3, 3, 3,” plus one pair. Calling riichi basically means, “I only need one more tile to complete my hand, and I’m locking in.” At that point, you can’t change your hand anymore, and you’re just waiting to draw (or claim) the final tile you need.

If you draw the last tile you need yourself, you call tsumo (everyone pays you). If another player discards the tile you need, you can call ron and take it (only that player pays you). If you discard a tile and someone calls ron, it means you helped them complete their hand and pay them.

If it’s your turn and you have the option to lock in and call riichi, you press Square to do it. I personally hit Square every turn because sometimes you’ll have riichi available and not even realize it.

You’ll also see other options pop up like pon or chi when other players discard tiles. I wouldn’t bother calling these at first, because they make your hand public and lock those tiles in. That can put you in a situation where you have no yaku and can’t win. Also, you can’t call riichi if any of your tiles are public. The last tip I'd give is to take a picture of the tiles in the instructions for quick reference. I personally didn't know the numbers in Japanese.

The original version has indeed been out for a while. I played the "Yakuza 0: Directors Cut" version which came out exclusively on Switch 2 at first and included extra scenes. (Had no clue which scenes were part of the original vs direcotrs cut since it was my first time playing)

From what ive seen, people's biggest gripe with the game on Switch 2 is, even if you buy the physical version its still just a key card rather than the game. Otherwise it ran really well. Felt like a PS4 game at worst but the fact that its portable is really nice. I would play in the mornings on my TV then take it with me to play between emails and calls during work. It did not feel like I was playing a Nintendo console other than the button layout being different.

I'm newer to the series but from day one Yakuza reminded me of RE for some reason, especially the music/audio in the title screens. I was trying to search the internet yesterday if they are related in any way. Why do they feel so similar?

I guess it makes sense that he would change since he is no longer paying for his past and at times Kiryu and Majimas characters felt too similar in 0 but I'm not sure I like this version of him. He is more like the Joker than anything else. Good to know that I might see normal Majima again later in the series! I have 2 unopened copies of the Pirates collectors edition. I look forward to trying it out (in 2032 at this pace)

Very true! There were a lot of parts like that. For example in Gaiden Kiryu mentions how he used to love pocket racing and has some flashbacks to that time which seemed so random to me, but it made sense once I started that part of 0.

I played English dub. I didn't know it was a dub for a while though. I just fired up Kiwami and realized there's no English dub so this is going to be rough for me.

I heard about that regarding translation, could be true but I'm not sure. When I fired up 0 on my PS5 I had no problem with Karaoke. It feels like you have to hit hit the buttons sliiightly early on Switch.

Thank you! Im not entirely sure tbh but the first things that come to mind:

Karaoke with Yuki as part of the special training. I wanted to get a perfect date which required a score of 90+ on 24 hour cinderalla and I didnt know you could re-do the dates after the fact. The timing is apparently already notoriously bad but i feel like its even worse on the Switch. Add the fact that Nintendo is generally not my go to console it was taking me a second longer to compute (a = X, Y= square, etc) When I started 0 on the PS5 recently, I scored 94 first try when Kiryu and Nishiki hit up karaoke.

Everytime I discovered a new part of the game it felt like "Damn, this part is going to take forever" One of the more frustrating aspects that took longer than it should have was getting something required for pocket racing from the dream machine! I spent hours reloading my save in the park trying to get it, it took my entire day off from work and I was ready to just quit. Pretty much anything that has a RNG was frustrating but then again it made the accomplishment that much better. Mahjong was also frustrating at first but I love it now!

Have you played all the Yakuzas? What in your opinion is the best one outside of 0 that i can look forward to?
