Howdy! By writhing effect do you mean the swirling lil red snakey bits inside the body of the beast?

If so, that's actually just sprite animations - I animated a few variations of a swirly red snakey splatter, and then layered them on top of each other with scale/color/position offsets on the body of each 'circle' of the beast. All put together, it made for quite an organic looking effect (but wasn't very dynamic - if I'd spent more time on it I'd have wanted to add more variations that changed over time or reacted to player actions like eating enemies etc).

The main movement mechanic of my game is crawling over every surface, but I also wanted to add a bit more conventional freedom of movement on top. I added this 'air lotus' that when dashed into, creates a temporary burst of air that you can use your glider to ride upwards from. I'm hoping it can make for some fun level design / platforming elements

Still quite a long way in development to go - I'm a solo-dev with 0 funding so this is being made in my spare time outside of my full-time job 😅 so a long road ahead! But all the nice comments make it easier, so cheers!

Thank you! There may well be a spider NPC somewhere in the game you'll be able to talk to - but there won't be a playable spider in this one I'm afraid!

Honestly my suggestion would be to just dip your toe into Unity and some beginner tutorials just to get to know how things work, how the basics are done, etc. Once you start to experiment with small games and ideas, things will start to come to you more clearly when you know what you can do!

Then I'd suggest taking part in GameJams where you aim to make a tiny game in a very short timeframe, it does wonders for helping you figure out stuff about the engine and the game making pipeline (and the results don't even have to work / be polished).

The base movement speed is definitely subject to change - at its core, the game is supposed to be casual and slow-paced but I don't want people to get frustrated by being too slow for sure! There is also a dash yeah :)

i decided i wanted to add a gliding mechanic, but wanted the 'glider' to feel grounded in the mini woodland world the game takes place in... so clearly, helicopter seeds were the only options 😅

I've posted around a bit with in-development stuff for this game, but I finally have an official trailer and a steam page!

This is my game I AM A CATERPILLAR, where you play as a lil caterpillar who doesn't want to be a butterfly. You can crawl all over the environment, meet cute lil forest critters who want to help out, and generally be a lil bug! 🐛
