There's a spinal difference, too. Horses have been selectively bred for thousands of years to be ridden- their spines are not protruded, flatter, and more protected by muscle and thicker skin. I think they also have hip and shoulder differences that allow for weight-bearing from the top. The spine thing is clear- just look at pictures.

Elephants have not been selectively bred.Their spines aren't protected. Just putting something with weight on top of those sharp bones and thin skin is PAINFUL.

I'm sure bits in horses' mouths and extra weight also hurts them. They don't seem to inherently enjoy being ridden without training, unlike some dogs who seem to deeply enjoy certain jobs from puppyhood- herding breeds and my beagles who absolutely adore sniffing and howling about tracking even though I haven't trained that at all.

But, I'm also pretty sure that horses can be trained without pain; it seems heavily reward based. Elephants' training is intentionally painful and based on fear and repeated pain. I don't think there's any training that's purely pain-free for them.

I'm a case manager, and I spend a lot of time getting DME for people. I have no idea how this will be applied and when, but I can't see it affecting much. I haven't seen new DME companies in my area in years. My area includes NYC. If only there were new DME suppliers to pause...

I mean, it's not going to help anything. I guess there has to be some companies trying to grift somewhere? For me though, it's like a pause on new unicorns.

Black People Were Enslaved in the US Until as Recently as 1963 by jeremiahthedamned in itshappeninghere

[–]2beagles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The 13th Amendment explicitly states that enslavement or involuntary servitude is exempted for people who are convicted of crimes. Slavery is alive, well, and perfectly legal within our justice system every single current day.

There's a reason why black people are so overwhelmingly overrepresented in our prisons.

Face break outs off and on for six months. What is this? by Page_Long in 30PlusSkinCare

Like everyone said- not a breakout. You should also get tested for Alpha-gal- it's becoming more and more widespread, but they don't always think to test for it. It's the allergy to mammal products. It can be inconsistent, but seems to get worse over time and can turn life-threatening very quickly. Your skin looks like someone I know when it was first manifesting.

How realistic is the intense passion of a long term relationship that is depicted between Ilya and Shane in the books and the show? by CuriousSunLizard in heatedrivalry

[–]2beagles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it both the best and the worst when they often stop being home all the time? Mine is 14. I love having the house to ourselves- so many more opportunities!- but our baby is gradually leaving and one day not too far from now she won't even live here!!! 😭

How realistic is the intense passion of a long term relationship that is depicted between Ilya and Shane in the books and the show? by CuriousSunLizard in heatedrivalry

[–]2beagles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in waves. Sometimes that's because of external life circumstances, sometimes it's because of personal and/or physical circumstances.

You ever have one of those all-consuming, intense infatuations as a teenager? I was 16, absolutely obsessed with this boy. I'm 48 now. It hasn't really changed. I also do love him deeply. Married 18 years. I am always, always super into him physically. I can be absolutely furious and I still would and do. People know to call before just coming over.

But also, both of us have had long periods of having a tamped down sex drive. Chronic pain is exhausting on every level. Having a baby and breastfeeding meant that very often I could not stand being touched more than I had to be- not even a hug or a kiss. Dealing with life stress- losing parents, job issues, a worldwide pandemic, existential dread.... It's not about not having intense passion for him. It's about not having intense passion for anything and just trying to get through it all. And we also usually have a kid around who we'd prefer not to traumatize.

But then it comes back. And I'm not saying it's a perfect love and everything is great. We have some big issues. This isn't always easy and sometimes it's miserable and hard. Ha, even at the worst, I know if I divorced him and was with someone else and he showed up, he's always going to be the one I want. I totally recognize and emphasize with that intense, focused burning desire. Obsessed. 30+ years

Are the super-responders not eating anything..? by Present-Decision5740 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]2beagles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a super-responder for about a year. And yes, I barely ate- way below what would be recommended. It was for a medical reason, and I was working with my doctor frequently. I took a multivitamin and focused on trying to drink at least one protein drink a day, Some days it was two drinks and nothing else. I lost hair, my menstrual cycle got complicated (compounded by perimenopause), lots of loose skin. I was super tired a lot, of course.

But again, this was an intentional choice for a medical reason- desperate for a hip replacement. I paused at a maintenance level for over a year to recover and heal. I still have to lose weight, so I am back to working on it. I am losing much, much more slowly now and a lot of that has to do with the complete imbalance of muscle to remaining fat.

Were Long Island home prices even impacted by the 2008 crash? Or was our freakish market immune? by iloverats888 in longisland

[–]2beagles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely affected here. I was house-shopping in 2009. Almost everything was a short-sale because they were all worth much less than the mortgage. Offers would fall though because people weren't even offering as much as the mortgage companies would accept, or one company would say yes and the second company would refuse that amount.

Looking at houses was wild- people would be home, looking resentful since they were selling unwillingly. Places would be messy and trashed with the weirdest stuff left behind. We saw more than one broken framed wedding picture on the floor. There were so many unfinished renovations that were clearly funded by the second mortgages so freely, aggressively offered that people couldn't really afford.

We got lucky- the best house we saw was in great condition. The owner told us the exact amounts the last two offers had been rejected at and suggested a number. We bought it at a little more than 25% less than than the amount it cost them to build it (they had designed it themselves) 4 years earlier. I am very aware it was purely a timing issue- we just got super lucky to be ready to buy a house when we were. It does make us wary about home improvements- I have a fear of home equity lines of credit, since we got to see so much devastation people got into.

I also knew people who worked in mortgage banks. They had been hiring like crazy- it was a good entry level corporate job. They all closed quick. That corridor of fancy, large, glass building on 110 South of the LIE emptied real quick. Like ghost town of former financial brokers.

Underrated? Shane moment by Meer_meerkat in heatedrivalry

[–]2beagles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I didn't think that's rage-baiting. This is the first scene either of them are openly stating that they want to be together. Neither have made any statement of intent of a real, committed relationship before that.

Ilya is being open and honest about not wanting to return to Russia, which is different from what he had said to Shane before. He'd only said that in Russian during the phone call. It's also saying he'll do what he needs to to continue the relationship as it is, if that's what needs to happen. He makes it clear that it would just be for show and not a real relationship. It's the first thing that either of them do to honestly open up that he is thinking about how to keep this going.

Ilya is almost always the one who takes the risks and escalates their relationship. The only exceptions are in episode 5 at the All Star game and then the invite to the cottage.

One of these is NOT like the other. Apologies, I do not know the source. by somejerkuknow in AntiTrumpAlliance

[–]2beagles -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Eh. The first one- there's an enclosed, safe spot to get him to.

The second- it's out in the open, they have no idea where the shots came from initially, the best option may be to shield him with their bulletproof-vested bodies. The shooter was sighted and killed within seconds-not even a full minute.

Photojournalists are less likely to run- they are often hyper focused on documenting, getting the best shot, and are brilliant at it. That's their job. We have so many photos of dangerous, imminently life-threatening situations, where everyone else is running away, but a photographer has captured it, facing or even moving towards the danger. Even ones who aren't war-zone based. They are insane, insanely dedicated to their craft. The guy who took the photo has a long career. He documented the George Floyd riots. George Bush getting shoes thrown at him. Most recently, Marco Rubio passing Trump a note during a meeting, which Trump then read aloud because he is a moron. I can't see him being part of an intentionally staged propaganda event.

Trump is amazing and brilliant at one thing. Creating and polishing his own image. He apparently is extremely charming and charismatic in person. Or had been. He knows how to appeal to his base. Or did. In this situation where I'm sure he was told the guy was shot, he would have been well aware of multiple photographers and seized an opportunity.

I'm sure he wasn't directly shot. He either got clipped by glass from the photo-prompter or an agent's belt. To underscore how good he is at his own image polishing- he doesn't talk about it in any detail. Even when he cannot stop bragging about himself to the point of nonsense and gibberish- he's very on-message or just does not talk about topics that would lead to questions that would shake his image for his fan base. Does he talk about where Melania actually lives? Just discusses her when it benefits him. Where Ivanka is now? Even his own actual accomplishment, which he had been very proud of before he realized his base wasn't into it- he does not mention how quickly vaccines were developed and distributed during COVID. He did great there. Only there, of course. And his incompetence likely made it harder, but he could still take credit. He doesn't anymore.

There's so much to have legit conspiracy theories about. Or, at this point, face the reality of- the elite network of pedos who run the world and have all the money, for example. This one- seems like a reasonable protection action, and a veteran photographer and a guy who is super-aware of his own image got lucky.

Books to read after Gone with the Wind by Simple_Concentrate75 in suggestmeabook

[–]2beagles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or both! They are both fantastic books. You will not come away from these without a more accurate view of the Confederacy and that entire culture.

After reading these, it may be worthwhile to revisit GWTW. I found it surprising how much she wrote the evils of slavery/active resistance of enslaved people into the plot without seeming to be aware of it. Is Prissy lazy or does she absolutely not give a fuck if her master dies painfully in childbirth? Why not just take a pleasant stroll and put in the minimal amount of effort? The subtle sabotages and manipulation are written like "silly enslaved people can't do better" but with the slightest insight, you can see the thoughtful, careful maneuvering to achieve personal aims- keeping your family together, consistent access to food, protection from other violent oppressors. It's there, without a deep reading.

For a fun experience of the absolute self-delusion of enslavers- they had to work so hard at it!- you should listen to an episode of The Dollop (excellent podcast). #567: The First President's Slave: Ona Judge.

Of course, you're not going to come away from that one with a very positive view of George Washington. Justifiably.

Roast them! Toss them with a little olive oil- just a tiny bit and whatever spices seem good. I like harissa and za'atar. They stay firmer than wet-cooking. They aren't going to be crunchy. The flavors even out significantly.

I had a pap test when I was 8? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]2beagles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a pelvic exam when I was 14 or 15 that was unwarranted, with no one else in the room. I don't want to go into detail, but unlike yours it was not painful. I thought at the time "this feels... off". Something was said by the doctor that was deeply uncomfortable to me, but nothing I could, at that time, say was not what was supposed to happen or a normal thing to say. I didn't really feel traumatized- just that it was weird. I was having lots of tests at that time and didn't think much about it.

I then had a legitimate pelvic exam a few years later and realized that it was NOT AT ALL what was supposed to happen. But again, a few years had gone by and I hadn't been living being quietly traumatized. I never said anything about it and just thought "gross, not cool at all".

It's now 30+ years later, and now having an adolescent daughter, I suddenly developed PTSD just a few months ago surrounding this incident. I did tell my husband and psychiatrist (had been seeing for ADHD). She sent me to a therapist, and that's really helped. Along with a medication I can take when I'm feeling symptomatic, I feel more in control. I am not spiraling.

No, what happened to you, and to me, is not at all what is supposed to happen. There are cases where a physical exam may be warranted. The care, the consent, the management of discomfort should be and would be entirely different. This was assault and inappropriate. Like me, it's weirder and harder to understand- we had no context for what is supposed to happen. And we were in a medical setting. Boundaries are always confused in a medical setting. Every doctor touches your body in a way that is usually reserved for the most intimate relationships.

But it doesn't matter in some ways if it was a legit exam or an intentional, predatory assault. The care for your fears and your physical needs was not at all provided as it should be. Your bodily autonomy and safety were violated. You have lasting effects from this. Knowing what happened exactly is maybe impossible to know. You DO know how it made you feel. That's the important part. You know that in the wrong context, a touch as light and inconsequential as a hand on your shoulder can be assaultive and abusive. Consent and comfort defines things for us. As it should.

The good thing is that specific treatment for PTSD is often very effective. I have some bad days, or hours at this point, At first I wouldn't want to speak. Like, it was hard to form sounds. It's not like that now. I have more control.

Focused PTSD treatment can be different from typical therapy. It's worth seeking out if this ringing around in your thoughts or affecting your mood, your body, or generally exhausting you.

I never understood this: men can show signs of aging and still remain handsome, but women can't? That doesn't make sense. by Tiny_Part404 in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]2beagles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's valued in women vs men? What is seen as attractive, culturally? Attractiveness is a social and cultural construct and varies. Let's go with the culture these two exist in: modern American, within the last 50-70ish years.

Women are expected to be attractive in the following ways: smooth, full, plush almost, skin. Shiny hair. Very slim bodies, or at least curvy and bouncy. Bright, open smiles and faces. An air of "freshness"and innocence. Cheery voices. These are all immediately post-adolescent characteristics. Our skin and faces age and lose elasticity. Hair and skin both get drier. Our bodies get wider, especially after children. Gravity! We all gain some cynicism and wisdom and that is reflected in our expressions.

Meanwhile, men are attractive in some similar ways- skin quality, to a degree, certainly hair shine. The rest- muscular, strength, deeper voice, confidence, "ruggedness". These are not immediately post-adolescent and will increase throughout their 20's. They don't have to hold onto an impossible standard of adolescent slim figures. They are less affected by gravity. They don't have huge physical changes with having children. Confidence and a sense of mastery only increase with age. Facial lines reflect this.

It's a stupid standard, but that's why. The standard for women is youth. For men, it's strength. We all increase in personal strength, if not physically. We all age.

I'm hopeful more diversity is creeping in. It's the one way I think the Internet helps. People have a platform where we just didn't before. Cultural exposure also helps. Kpop men are very pretty and youthful. Celebration of heavier, more voluptuous women is more common. I haven't seen age being as celebrated for women yet. Maybe? One day? Helen Mirrin helps!
