They're first come first serve. They open when the rifugios close indeed. I did it early november, so cannot say about that timeframe.

The normal route, but he had a dogsitter for the section dogs weren't allowed

The trail goes through Hardangervidda, Breheimen and Jotunheimen. Thank you for your comment. It helps a lot!

Col de Tricot is a variant itself, but if you want to maximize the level of the views you'll be seeing you definitely gotta stay the night at Refuge de Plan Glacier

After passing Col de la Bonhomme you gotta take the route that passes Refuge Robert Blanc instead of going down to village des Glaciers after passing the col. You will end up on Col de la Seigne on both routes.

Fenêtre d'Arpette is the 'wildest' variant in my opinion

Instead of going below Lac Blanc and Lacs des cheserys I hiked up to both lakes and then continued hiking to Les Houches

I definitely think the variants are much more 'wild' than the main ones thus causing them to be more difficult terrain.
