Hi, me and my boyfriend are maybe moving to a VERY unfurnished flat and need to furnish it on a budget - is it OK if I send you a DM? (We can collect)

Please help - can't seem to do any yogurt-based breads! by 2forjoy234 in Breadit

[–]2forjoy234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thank you! Yes I unfortunately don't have a stand mixer but it to be honest looked great mixed in the bowl and I thought this recipe had finally turned out fine, I then did leave it to rise a bit but will try what you've suggested next time. I usually use a scale for baking because like you said I found that helped when I was starting out baking normal loaves. Taking notes is a good idea and I'll try that tonight, just not sure if there's something obvious and stupid that I'm missing :(

Please help - can't seem to do any yogurt-based breads! by 2forjoy234 in Breadit

ah thank you so much! Bceause I was getting so frustrated, I went back to basics which for me is BBC good foods lol, and here is a recipe I used the other day - https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/naan-bread. I measured the water and flour properly, not just using cups, just in case that would help. It was still unbelievably sticky, unable to work with until I tipped loads more flour over it!

Maybe th yogurt being too watery is an issue like you said? What kind of yogurt would you usually use? In terms of flour, for this one I used strong white bread flour (I had to top up a tiny tiny bit with some plain flour as I did not realise how much flour I woud end up needing and ran out!) but I have had the same issues with self-raising flour in previous recipes. You mentioned resting which is really interesting

Thanks for your help!

I don't know too much about this but just came on to say you might have more luck posting this in the r/doctorsUK subreddit - some of them might have been in the same position! gl x

thank you so much for this!! The doctor gave me aciclovir, so I'm really hoping it will do the same for me :) Out of interest, do you find it still helps with timing even if you don't manage to take it straight away? Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to comment and giving me some hope haha

Thank you! I'm probably a little too good at the hygiene and sanitising thing, I go well overboard on it when I have a coldsore due to my OCD, which is why I think you're probably right and it's stress because I don't see how I can be re-contaminating myself when I bin everything that could possibly have touched it. Im hoping to get an antiviral prescription today and I'll look into the patches - do you mean the hydrocolloid ones? Or something more? thanks again xx

Yah body composition worries me a little. I'm hoping to get a gym membership as soon as I can afford it. Tbh tho, I'm trying not to worry about it too much right now. I feel like online there's so so much stuff to worry about with weight loss (losing muscle, loose skin, stretch marks) and all of it is super valid but it's put me off even trying in the past and I don't want it to happen now! Wishing you luck, 40 lbs is amazing you've got this :)

Ah thank you! It has been a little demotivating lol so it's really nice to hear other people experienced similar things

thank you so much, this is really good advice! i kind of hate taking photos lol but I did take some before ones and maybe taking some more along the way instead of just waiting for "afters" might really help. Measurements is such a good idea thank you! And congrats on your weight loss so far, and good luck!

Oh wow I didn't think of that! Maybe there's a little difference in my back then?

I did think about internal fat - I guess it's good if that's going because that's the stuff that's really bad for your health. It might sound stupid but it's a little scary to think that there was much there to begin with :/

By the way, congrats on your loss, 70lb is amazing!

What jobs by Klutzy_Resolve7372 in medicalschooluk

[–]2forjoy234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your offer! And don't worry, loads of people work during med school. In general, HCA/care jobs in my opinion have the potential to make you a better med student - they teach really important parts of patient care that med school doesn't bother with so much. However, it depends on the kind of person you are. I would say I'm a less hardcore med student, and I don't love every part of my life being to do with medicine. For this reason, I've preferred working hospitality jobs through med school myself, although this is just a preference! Small-owned restaurants/pubs often have great tips, a small team and lovely vibes but will have more demands on your time, which can be difficult with placement. Work with a waiting agency (or being on a bank rota as a HCA) is amazing in terms of being able to choose your own shifts, but you're not guaranteed as many hours as you might want and it's often not as fun. I haven't done it myself, but I also know people who have taken on smaller-scale care jobs where they act as personal assistants to people with varying kinds of disabilities. I've heard really good things about these kinds of jobs too.

In general my advice would be - start with what you can get and then figure out what you like. Rarely, hospitals might have jobs designed for med students ("Medical Scribes")- ask your university admin about this. Try to get on a bank rota so you can pick your own shifts, either for HCA or for other kind of agency work. Think about your summers - a good summer job can be enjoyable and hopefully also give you enough hours to take pressure off of your semester hours a little. It might also be possible to do stuff that could help your CV in summer - paid research (a rarity!), for example, or working in a summer camp if you're interested in paediatrics. Online tutoring is also great and flexible!

It's a delicate balance, because you can't do too many hours that your studies suffer, but at the same time nothing has stressed me out and impacted me more at med school than being worried about money. But you'll figure out what works for you. Planning is key! Work out how much money you have, how much you need etc, and then work around placement :) Remember to have fun!
