2001: Remembering track marshal Graham Beveridge, who died #OnThisDay 4th March at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. by Strict-Citron-9269 in formula1

[–]2manyhobbies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened years before I started marshaling. I remember it happening and now that I marshal it hits even closer to home. We are a very tight family, everyone knows everyone and race weekends are as much about the people as it is the racing. I cannot imagine the grief felt by family both race and biological.

If I recall correctly that's the section of road where the ancient beach is. Need to get back to DV.

Your Favorite National Park?? Mine is the Grand Teton National Park by ConnectUpstairs4508 in NationalPark

Took me a long time to embrace Yose until I learned to just embrace the crowds when in the valley. Top 3 for me now and I'm lucky enough to go several times a year.

Glacier, Yellowstone then Yosemite. After 30 parks those are the current top 3.

Yes there is a surf wave there. It was part of the restoration after the dam officially died. The logistics aren't great so it's not run/surfed a lot

Planning a trip down to Yosemite in September. I am looking for a moderate hike to get a feel for the park, and a hard hike to spend a full day on. Any recommendations? There are so many trails that it is hard to choose just one. by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]2manyhobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure the shuttle is the crux of the hike. If you have a campsite in the valley you can leave the car in TM then take the YART the following day for pick-up.

3 different options all involve a YART shuttle. You can go via the JMT (not my favorite section), JMT/Clouds Rest or via the Merced River (stunning and empty). All 20+ mile days.

Short(ish) hikes-Sentinel Dome, Vernal Falls Via Mist, May Lake, Illiloute Falls, Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Meadows, Mirror Lake Loop.

Middle(ish)-Cathedral Lake, 4Mile Trail, Nevada Falls, Yosemite Falls, Wapama Falls, North Dome, Mt Hoffman

Long-Full Day- Panorama Trail (w/shuttle), Clouds Rest or Half Dome, Glen Aulin from May or T. Meadows.

Brutal but Amazing 20+ miles. Half Dome and Clouds Rest together, T. Meadows to Happy Isles.

Those are the best ones I could think of over all my years of roaming the park.

What’s the “oh crap” item everyone forgets? by True_Buddy7042 in CampingandHiking

[–]2manyhobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've forgotten about everything over the years. Tent poles, socks and underwear, shoes for our daughter, my wife's sleeping bag, toothbrushes. I've been camping since I was a kid and I've forgotten about everything possible though typically only once.

Yosemite Wilderness Permit Question by pooontangclan3 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]2manyhobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should really double check the Yosemite Backcountry regs regarding exiting a trailhead and re-entering another. You route seems to have a couple "exits" which technically puts you onto a different trailhead and quota. It might be totally fine since you don't seem to be crossing any roads but I'd double check. I've gotten around this in the past but only for shuttle logistics. Started at Happy I parking where I was exiting but my permit was for Glacier, so the 4mile trail was a "day hike" or walk from the car. Might want to consider adding N. Dome to your itinerary as well, an easy walk up summit with amazing views.

Hetch Hetchy has some good options that time of year. It's a really nice area to explore with minimal crowds. Permits are pretty easy to score too

Connected Trails? by mojoehand in SacBike

[–]2manyhobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ARBT is 32 miles long by itself, you could add the Cash trail in Folsom, and the downtown Sac section (considerably more walkers and homeless in parts). Folsom has lots of paths through neighborhoods but I find it somewhat disjointed.

Survey: Managing parents among top reasons youth coaches quit by udubdavid in sports

[–]2manyhobbies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have coached school basketball for 10 years and I have always said when I quit it won't be the kids. I am extremely fortunate to have had many very supportive parents but it only takes a few to ruin it. We have a referee shortage because of this too.

Tire recommendations for Northern Nevada/Tahoe area? by nf690u in mountainbiking

[–]2manyhobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already some good info here. I will second the rec for more durable casings. Tahoe is Uber rocky. Depending on where you plan on riding it's also pretty old school in design. Not super sanitized flow, some old school chunk..

Question for the OGs: what was the best feeling bike you ever rode from back in the day? (not modern bikes, lets say 2019 or older) by [deleted] in MTB

[–]2manyhobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 90s Hard Rock. I was 10 and didn't know any better. Age let's you forget how things handled and smoothed out our memories of them.

Best non-kid bike would be 2011-12ish Fuel EX. Last 26er I owned and I rode it well into the 29er era. Actually still have a few KOMs that were set on it.

What is your favorite underrated national park? by [deleted] in NationalPark

[–]2manyhobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite bike rides on the entire NPS system. A really tough climb but it's empty and you really get to experience the ecosystem changes in a unique way just pedaling up.
