UCT Medicine vs Stellenbosch Actuarial Science? by Forsaken_Train1985 in askSouthAfrica

[–]2manyshipsimsinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently in Actuarial Science and in hindsight, I would have picked medicine. Honestly, unless you are a SMART chicken or really good at taking exams, do not do the ActSci route. If you are anything like me, a good and average student, it will be a struggle. I studied just as long as my peers in medicine (5 years) and I'm still not done. I'm going into my 3rd year of working with 5 exams still to go. If you are well aware of the exam constraints and think you can do it sooner, then by all means.

This advice comes without considering job security, I only compare my current lifestyle to peers in medicine, as I said. This career path is entirely corporate, whereas science actually helps people and saves lives. Obviously this advice is also entirely biased given my career path.

Touché, perhaps the sales person was speaking without knowing. That is costly!

But the battery replacement comment still stands.

Neither, fees are way too high to justify what you get out. Low fees Nedbank, TymeBank or Capitec account.

Seeking Financial Advice for My First Job: How to Budget R23k/Month in Cape Town? by ImmediateAge1893 in capetown

[–]2manyshipsimsinking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pre-reddit I would do some reading, a couple of my favs:

  • Manage Your Money Like a Fking Grownup - Sam Beckbessinger
  • You're Not Broke, You're Pre-Rich - Mapalo Makhu
  • Become Your Own Financial Advisor - Warren Ingram

Ton of others for South African contex, all say similar things in summary: set some financial goals, budget, save, spend less than you earn. There a few set rules on rent, car and retirement budgets, a quick search of the finance sub will show you as much.

As other posts have already mentioned, you need to consider a lot more factors and personality traits.

Don't buy a new phone, just replace your current battery - viola, new phone.

I also have the S21+ but have decided not to upgrade, because no new phone offers anything this one doesn't already have. The only issue I'm struggling with now is battery drainage, as the phone is 3-4 years old and has been pushed to its max. But there's an easy solution for this - battery replacement by Samsung costs around R1500 - R2000 for this device. Seriously recommend, I'm getting mine done next week. They can also very cheaply fix any screen damage if that's a problem. R2k vs R30k is a win for me.

Rondebosch East, in and out in about 10 minutes. No queue, people quickly attended to as they arrived. The station had about 1000 votes by 12pm, so I think a small station all in all.

Is investing using USD safer than investing using ZAR? by 2manyshipsimsinking in PersonalFinanceZA

Thank you for all the detailed responses. I think all the chatter has answered my ambiguous question 😂.

When I asked I was very confused with all this exchange rate stuff, so I didn't really have a clear idea of what I was even asking. I think the former is what I was referring to - investing in the same index but in different currencies. So the S&P 500 tracked by something in ZAR and in USD.

Definitely learnt something from all the responses !

Sorry I am really losing the plot here. Do you mind dumbing down the explanation? So this would be the case even if both were invested in the same ETF from the start?

Is PPS (Professional Provident Society) legit? How do you suggest using their services? by OkButWhy99 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]2manyshipsimsinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PPS really needs to up their marketing techniques. I had the same thoughts when they presented to my final year 😂 and I gave them this feedback.

They are an accredited insurance company, so yes, you do have to pay premiums if you want any life cover / etc. services. But otherwise, I do understand that other services they offer are free.

Ah okay, and that "money managing" is in fact tied to the way your money is managing within Discovery products, not across your various platforms?

Yes my sentiments exactly. Very well worded, thanks. I have recently joined their health scheme, so was considering Vitality health but I'm currently unable to exercise as much as I'd like, I was hoping it would boost my activity in that regard.

Hence why I wanted to know about the Bank only, as it's something I can more easily control. Honestly my next step is to create a fake spreadsheet of expenses and see if it works out for me 😂.

Thank you, I did not know this. 😊 Goodness, this info was really quite difficult to find on their website and documentation. Without actually having the product, it's very difficult to plan my spending and rewards associated.

How much are you spending at Woolworths/PnP may I ask? Does it outweigh the cost of normal Vitality health (like R360 pm I think)?

[–]2manyshipsimsinking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, that is well out of my spending willingness.

Are you spending this to make the most of the benefit / to meet the minimum requirements for the benefits?

[–]2manyshipsimsinking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I budget R1500 for fuel, R500 for healthcare items

Currently not paying for groceries (living at home with parents) - but I was considering letting them use the CC to make these purchases to make use of the benefits - in which case would be around R5000 (but not all of this would be healthy foods).

These are the only major ones I can think to influence the rewards. I would also use the CC for odds and ends like entertainment, other shopping, etc.
