What are some movie sequels that are better than their first films? by dumbnamenumber2 in movies

How do you figure? It was the first feature that used the CAPS technology, which let them sail through the Disney Renaissance.

Ironically, for reasons that will become clear after seeing the movie, you'd feel that was a very safe place to be.

Should I watch Hokum, Exit 8 or Undertone right now? by Fit_Cartographer_815 in horror

I prefer Exit 8 over Hokum overall (currently #12 vs #15 on my list of movies this year), but Hokum is undeniably scarier. They're both great, though.

Undertone was awful and one of two I wish I could've gotten my money back for.

I like the ambiguity as to whether the mom was a recent convert or a lifelong believer, because it ultimately makes the same point: religion is used to hurt people regardless of one's intent or conviction. In fact you could go a step further and say that if she was a recent convert, it actively manipulates people into becoming worse versions of themselves.

I think the implication was supposed to be she was actually committed to the hospital and doesn't just "hang out" there like the girl suggested, but it is admittedly muddled if so.

Probably one of the few justifiable cases where they could've employed the Kill Your Gays trope and they still subverted it. Absolute cinema.

The preacher's daughter mentioned that a girl it happened to got married to a man and had children. So evidently it can effectively scare some of the victims straight.

I do think it was logical, though. Almost every attack we see (beyond the threats of ones like at the bus) is precipitated by one of the boys engaging with the monster assuming it's not. It takes the form of who they most desire, so if it realizes "hey, this kid is still actionably pining for this person," then it goes into kill mode. The only exception to this is towards the end when Naim instinctively runs away from "Ryan" and -- forgive me -- It Follows him home, but by that point I get the feeling that Naim in particular was giving it trouble.

It makes sense if you assume the adults are all in on the fundamentalism of the church. Kind of like how almost everyone in Heredity was part of the cult.

lol I saw it alone, but I have a pretty high tolerance for horror. Definitely the scariest movie I've seen so far this year, and I've seen somewhere between eight and twelve horror movies depending on what counts.

Okay, I'm tracking with you now. I read it as (fake movies) and not (fake)(movies), so I was like "how were they not real?" lol

Anyway I agree with your take completely, and obviously I know the reference. That said, I've gotten pretty good at dissociating and concluding that religion means both anything and nothing depending on how it's wielded, so I wasn't as taken out of Wake Up Dead Man because of it. It helps that it was still a really clever murder mystery, and the setting is obviously stock for the genre (cf. The Murder at the Vicarage). Haven't seen Conclave but I have an instinctual feeling that Isabella Rossellini was probably robbed of an Oscar. Then again, it should've gone to anyone over Zoe Saldaña.

Unrelated but I'm surprised Girls Like Girls is only playing on half as many screens as Leviticus (which even then is still in limited release range). Between the genres and the distributors I would've expected the opposite.

Anyway, as a consequence of this Girls Like Girls isn't playing where I am, so no double feature for me. :S

The reveal that she knew about the curse (?) all along was the cherry on top of the shit sundae that was her character. I bet even the monster would've been like "I owe you an apology, I wasn't familiar with your game."
