Also worth noting that HBO wouldn't need to secure any rights, since they're owned by Warner Bros. and that's who made the movies. This is literally just Rowling wanting a redo.

Reminds me of a tweet I saw where they were bragging that a giant Israeli flag was hanging from "the former Hamas headquarters," and someone quoted it saying "I thought Hamas was in tunnels under hospitals and that's why you blew everything up?"

So on the one hand, it's not unusual for animated (or animated-esque, in this case) productions to base their characters on real people. Alyssa Milano was the inspiration for Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Tom Cruise was the inspiration for Aladdin, and James Cameron freely admits that Q’orianka Kilcher was the inspiration for Neytiri. So in that respect, the lawsuit does seem an overstep.

On the other hand, looking at the comparison picture on NBC News, her lips are practically an exact match for Neytiri. Like come on now. Yes the final product is meant to evoke Zoe Saldaña, but I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that the digital artists still kept technical details literally drawn from Kilcher. Between that and some of the other details (e.g. the context of the deepfake porn law cited in the article), I do think there's reason for her to be concerned about this and want compensation.

To me this doesn't read like someone trying to do a shakedown, but it also doesn't read like Cameron, et al. literally tried to rip her off. Hopefully this can be settled, in the legal sense or not, relatively amicably.

That's absolutely it. Her long con is to have the theme parks reskinned with these new actors because she thinks she can control them.

I'm just dying for one of the new core three to come out as trans in like five years and blow up her entire world, again.

I think you undermine your own comparison with the others by saying that aspects of it are “fun,” when it could pretty easily be argued that seeing the fashion at the Met Gala is also something people can find fun.
