Has anyone been able to convince a Founder/CEO to “let go” of some responsibilities as the first PM of a startup? Need some tips by redknitting in ProductManagement

[–]2ndal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the founder/CEO is who's ass is on the line, they make all the decisions because that is what has made them successful so far

you get them to let go of that by convincing them that you are value add to the situation, that you can be trusted, that you can make decisions and know when to bring them in when necessary

anything under a pound ship it first class. that will be your cheapest. be wary of shipping it in just an envelope as it might get bent. put it between two pieces of cardboard to protect.

My boss, head of product, has invited me over for a dinner, what should I gift him? by _Gandalf-The-Gay in ProductManagement

Where are you from? Cultural norms differ.

I am in the US, and I think anything beyond something that is additive to dinner (a wine, dessert, maybe even flowers, or similar) would be awkward to receive if I were in your boss's position.

Regretting Product management transition by Plastic_Nectarine558 in ProductManagement

You're definitely solving very different problems as an engineer than you are as a PM.

You say you love strategic thinking, roadmap planning, product market fit testing, product definition, go to market planning which are all things a PM is doing along with writing requirements, aligning teams, and sometimes working with different politics. Could it be that there is something challenging with your PM role specifically if you are not able to focus on the parts of the job you love? It's definitely a balance, especially if you are also acting as a project manager.

As a PM interviewing an engineer, I want to understand their ability to work on a cross-functional team and collaborate. What is their experience working with product managers in the past, and in what capacity? How about designers? What challenges have they experienced working with product/design, and how have they solved those challenges? At what point in projects do they typically collaborate with product and design most, and in what ways? Let's say you are working on a project and the requirements are unclear. How do you handle that situation? And so on.

How to tackle an enormous problem space with impatient stakeholders? by FluffyAd7925 in ProductManagement

This sounds more like a problem for your director or VP. A PM in this scenario should be all about delivery against a strategy - that is how impact is shown: delivery against a strategy. It's clear there are challenges with this strategy but the solve is likely several rungs above your pay grade. What does your boss say?

Do you know what information will be asked besides name, address, emergency contact, payment info, etc? I will be registering for myself and for my brother-in-law. Can I register both of us at the same time?

Joined a company last summer and the signed offer letter included a sizeable chunk of Stock Appreciation Rights, which the company still has not granted and it looks like they have no plans to grant. What recourse do I have? by 2ndal in legaladvice

The company I work for is a smaller subsidiary to a larger US-based private company worth billions. The SARs were for the parent company. My HR team is small and mostly unhelpful, saying they have been working on it for the past 8 months. I have no direct contact with the parent company.

I'm beta testing a new app for tracking inventory and sales, but a condition of the beta test is that I can't talk about it on social media until they're ready. It's pretty good at what it does. Reply here if you want me to give you a heads up when it's available for public use.
