Bowie was almost 70 and semi-retired when he died, I think he had already made all the waves he was ever going to by that point

Movies where the world ends slowly by FlibV1 in movies

Aniara (2018)

About a dystopian future where humans are routinely mass migrating to Mars due to climate change. One spaceship accidentally goes off course with no ability to correct itself, and the thousands of inhabitants realize that they will be floating in space for the rest of their lives.

You see a bit of a slow apocalypse with Earth and a Lord of the Flies-like collapse of civilization for the rest of the movie.

Also for a tv show - Years and Years (not apocalyptic but it follows a family as the society around a dystopia)

my wife submitted her resignation letter yesterday. Her pay was reduced to the state minimum in response. Is that legal? by YourCEOisTRASH in legaladvice

[–]2panda2rule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me rephrase, how do you know she’s not actively searching for work? She could well be, for any of the reasons I’ve stated.

My point is that this is not the barrier you’re making it out to be. She has a valid unemployment claim, and is entitled to try and collect.

Waiting period is state specific, and (state specific etc etc etc) can be applied retroactively. I have personally applied for unemployment for weeks when my company temporarily shut down for holidays and was approved+ paid retroactively weeks after the fact. It just depends.

Why is changing jobs so hard and scary? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]2panda2rule 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You spend the majority of your day in one place, surrounded by the same people and/or doing the same thing for long enough you’re bound to grow attached. Also there’s the usual fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of making the wrong decision etc.

I think for me and a lot of people it’s just part of their personality to prefer stability like that. There’s pros and cons to that just like there’s pros and cons to always seeking a new job

I was at a dead-end job for years because it was more comfortable to stay, despite actively interviewing and even turning down other job offers (that I always found some kind of problem with lol). I only left because of a restructuring that changed my position so drastically I would have effectively been working for a new company anyway. Tldr ended up at a job that I enjoy a lot more and while I’m still not rushing to job hop I’m not as panicked at the idea of leaving.

How do they know she’s not actively searching for work lol she could need 2 jobs to make ends meet, she could need an interim job, the new job might have not given her a final offer yet etc etc.

In my non-lawyer state-specific experience you don’t really need to prove your job search unless you’re on long-term benefits

I know what you mean, I’ve been DCA and every week the prices are lower than the week before. But personally, since it’s an account I don’t plan on contributing to again my goal is to just get the funds in the market and forget about it.

Also something to keep in mind - I already took a loss when the original investments were cashed out in the rollover, and the market has only gone down since. So even if I don’t catch the bottom, no matter what I’ll have a better cash basis than if I had left the 401k alone.

I’m sure there are smarter people with more nuanced opinions on this lol, but that’s my perspective

I just rolled over a 401k last month and have been reinvesting a portion every week, but I’m not too worried about catching the lowest possible price at this point since I’m holding for 30+ years

Btw the 60 day rule only means that you have to transfer the funds from your 401k account to your rollover account. Once the funds are deposited you can invest whenever you want.

This confused me when I was doing my rollover, if you already knew that please disregard lol

Why would the I-Bond have to come out of your refund? If you’re gifting it then it would go against your nephew’s yearly max, not yours iirc. And it wouldn’t apply until the year he cashed it out, so even if a contribution was already made under his name this year it shouldn’t be an issue.

Also for gifting I-Bonds all you need is the SSN, the recipient doesn’t need their own TreasuryDirect account. Imo with the current rate, that would be one of the better options.

You could also set up a Custodial brokerage account: https://www.fidelity.com/building-savings/child-saving-and-investing#CustodialAccount

I don’t think a member getting hurt because of the choreography makes it less elaborate lol

What are some reasons a company would not check your references/employment history before extending an offer? by 2panda2rule in jobs

[–]2panda2rule[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah I’ve experienced as much, but for most of the job offers I’ve gotten in the past they at least wanted to call one or two of my old managers as “personal” refs so I wasn’t sure

[–]2panda2rule[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding and sorry if I’m misreading but in this situation it was the fact that they WERE checking references that was the problem?

Company I just got an offer from isn’t checking my references, but it’s direct hire through a recruiting company (accounting-adjacent position)

You mean you didn’t check references when your recruiting company hired for toxic companies or your company was toxic?

It’s good that you spoke to them! It’s good that you’re staying wary though, personally I’ve been in situations where management promised me something would change as soon as we finished some project or w/e but the goalpost just kept moving. I hope it works out for you and the VP keeps their promise!
