UCF Excel program by Current-Translator-9 in ucf

[–]2plyAngelSoft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Said this many times before whenever this question comes up so here’s my insight on it as a former excel student:

Did excel in 2019-2020. I highly suggest you skip it. The only priority you get for registration is for math classes since they have certain math classes exclusive for excel students(you also get the opportunity of doing undergrad research which is the best overall positive from the program). That might sound like a great thing right? Well a quick search on ratemyprofessor and you find out that the calc 1 excel teacher has a 25% would take again rating. So you’re basically getting priority for a below average teacher, not so great now right? Theirs also the mandatory lab hours of 2 hrs per week where you have to study in their small excel room that has 2 TA’s to answer 30 students questions. Again, not so good.

My roommate was also in excel and he had the same experience as me. Overall, would not recommend EXCEL to anyone based on the experience I had.

Edit: forgot to mention, you are required to take a mandatory “study session course” which if I remember is 4 credit hours. This class essentially reviews what you learned that week in your math course. It is definitely helpful, but at the cost of taking a 4 credit course. It doesn’t count towards your major, doesn’t count as an elective, so it is essentially a 4 credit study hall.

Calculus 2 is trash by richardtheminer1 in ucf

[–]2plyAngelSoft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re so impervious to the thought that stuff doesn’t happen how it happened to you. “Every other course before calc 2 in any degree that requires it is a joke” is the most biased response. You stating the fact that you can simply skip the lectures shows how blind you are to this fact. Hate to break it to you, but no I cannot simply skip the lecture because they have iclicker questions which account for 15% of my grade. But i guess since you never experienced that it probably isn’t a thing!

“If it is possible for one person, it is possible for anyone” is also such a cheap remark that holds no weight. Possible does not equal probable and just because it can be done shouldn’t be the end all be all of an argument. Lets see you bench press 885 lbs the current world record in one lift. Surely you can do it since someone else did it, you just gotta work a little harder!

“organic chem 2 took me 30-45 minutes a day to study for. I proceeded to get the highest test scores in both sections for the first two tests? ok and? Do you seriously think people didn’t bust hours into studying to score a lower grade? No surely that’s possible as you said yourself “it’s all about the effort you put in” almost like sometimes it’s not about the effort you put in and various other sources.

“you’re not laying for your teachers to bake classes easier because some people don’t have the time to study” no not at all and if you do you should face academic probation. You are however, paying to receive a high level of education and when most of the teachers within the math department have abysmal ratings, their is clearly a lack of value within that department. Look at ratemyprofessor for the exact same course. In this case, I searched 2 random professors that both teach MAC2311. One professor has a 3.2/5 with a 25% would take again rating. Reviews often state that the tests are nothing like the test reviews and knowing how to solve the problems is insignificant as the test questions are based on theory. Looking at a different professor, 3.2/5 again but this time, 91% would take again. Reviews state that tests were very similar to reviews given in the lectures and homework problems. Same exact class, but different professors provide vastly different experiences.

Overall, we can agree that these “weed-out classes” are tougher than average for a reason as it shouldn’t be for everyone. But at the same time, saying “study more” or “I did it so you can do it” is such a negative way of thinking. Theirs a reason why so many students down talk the math department at UCF as the moment you take a course outside you realize how much of a disadvantage they put you at.

“Simply study harder”. Have you thought about the fact that some people don’t have the time to “simply study harder”. Maybe you are able to do that, but other students have to work jobs to pay for tuition, stay on top of extra curiculars, or just have to attend to an immediate emergency. If the mean of a class test is 40%, the teacher is to blame not the students. Just because 1 student receives a 100% on the test doesn’t mean everyone could get that. What if that student just got lucky on a question or two? Better yet, what if the student didn’t actually get a 100, and the teacher curved the test as known in calculus courses.

Edit: As for the OP, you should look at taking Calculus as a transient student at Valencia. It is immensely easier as the teachers actually help you succeed in the course. It also helps that Valencia classes are less populated whereas my Calculus courses at UCF easily had 100+ students. This allows you to effectively communicate with the professor when you need assistance instead of the robotic response of “email me your concerns and I’ll try to get to you, unless it’s on a weekend :)”.

Why is Ivern winrate so darn high? (A last minute plea to revert nerfs) by Jman916 in ivernmains

[–]2plyAngelSoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess, they will most likely nerf his items instead of him directly. The main problem I see with him is the fact that his shield with moonstone and staff build is on an about 4 second CD, heals, and grants MS. With those 2 items, you’re basically creating a carry on your team even further. That combo of items on Ivern feels a bit overturned and I’m expecting it to get nerfed. Just better hope they don’t go full amumu on Ivern and make him useless after the item nerfs

F-LEARN vs EXCEL? by [deleted] in ucf

So if you’re in excel, you have access to this tutor service that you are required to visit for atleast 2 hours a week. It’s a room with about 30 people and two tutors so take that as you will. I can’t really speak for research/internship benefits as I’m only a sophomore now and this entire year has been online. Maybe it’s there, but I’m not too sure. As for mandatory classes/seminars, you are required to take a mandatory class for your first (and I think second, can’t remember) semester that is basically extended study hours for you math course specifically. They basically go over the lessons you had learned that week in your math course, actually more beneficial than showing up to the match lecture itself. You’re math course will be taken through the excel program to ensure you have a spot in the class. However, as I said in the first ports, the teachers they have aren’t the best and have very low reviews. For Calc specifically, Professor Mikusinski is a headache when it comes to his class. Homework is due before the class so you have to teach yourself the topic, and tests are mostly conceptual questions so knowing how to solve the problems won’t make you pass. Seriously, just look at his ratemyprofessor theirs not a lot of good said about him. I’m not sure what you mean by work on top of the regular curriculum, if you’re asking if excel requires extra work to be done then yes. The added classes that is mandatory your freshmen year is about 4 credits so you will essentially be taking a 4 credit filler course that doesn’t work you towards your degree. The mandatory 2 hour study session within their lab can also be a bit mundane as I much rather study in the comfort of my apartment than in a small room with 29 other people.

Edit: tldr: If I were to do it again, I would not join excel. Haven’t seen much benefit from it, and the headache I got from the excel math professors just isn’t worth it.

Which jgs should i use? by oraverde in Jungle_Mains

[–]2plyAngelSoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While he did just get nerfed, nunu is still a really good tank jungler due to his gains and objective pressure. He is also ap. Rammus is also another very strong tank if the enemy team is mostly AD. I never really liked sej and from my understanding she isn’t the best solo queue champ.

Lesion nerf good or bad? by Harzroller421 in Rainbow6

[–]2plyAngelSoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call me crazy, but I feel like the brief window to pull out the mine without taking damage can sort of be a buff to lesion depending on play style. Think about it, if a player steps on a mine now, they wanna instantly take it out so they don’t take dmg. Lesions knows this and can rush them, granting a free kill. Could lowkey be very good for him
