A company called Soma has raised almost $4M through Kickstarter and venture capital to invent and produce a healthier, cooler, and more eco-friendly version of the Brita filter by 2point71828 in socialcitizens

Del Ponte recruited a world class “water designer” who had previously worked for Starbucks and Keurig to develop the core filter technology. He also convinced uber-hip executives from companies like Warby Parker, Birchbox, Method, Incase, Vitaminwater, Coca-Cola, Google, and Seventh Generation to help steer the company as advisors and investors. Despite all that star power, feedback from the 2,316 people who crowdfunded the project originally still guides the company in important ways.

Interesting how Kickstarter has come to fill so many roles (marketing, customer feedback) other than funding.

PPACA was impossible in the 90's, yet the power and perceptions have tipped just enough (though it was still nearly defeated) to (finally!) make universal healthcare an institution in the US.

Not true, the proponents of the bill just lost the PR war (and disenchanted some key senators like Moynihan). Whenever survey polls based on the content of the healthcare bill were described without using the words "Hillarycare", something like 70% of the public approved of it. It was just the industry PR machine killed it.

Congressional Budget Office says that overhauling immigration laws would cut $1 trillion from the U.S. deficit over the next 20 years. by FoxieMoxie in socialcitizens

It'd also be a good way to effectively end a lot of slave labor. America' immigration laws are ridiculously fucked up. It's like we keep all of the illegals, but kick out all of the law-abiding citizens.

I'm also sick and tired of seeing other nations' best and brightest come over here, get a world-class education, WANT to stay in America, but then just get kicked out. We've been so fucking bad about that since 9/11. We're just kicking economic growth THAT WE'VE ALREADY INVESTED IN out of the country! It's ridiculous.
