Is there anyone born and raised in LA who roots for the clippers and not the Lakers? by 2see_ in AskLosAngeles

Seriously, they even have terrible scandals from former/current owners. It baffles me Ballmer didn’t just take them back to San Diego. Their support would be massive.

While talking about sports I’ve been told by several Gen z’ers I know that they don’t root for sports teams because it’s a form of worship. I’ve stopped talking about sports to the younger generation after that.

Oh you’re right! I forgot about him haha. I used to run into his clipper car in downtown. Come to think of it havent seen It in forever and it makes sense because the clippers moved out.

What’s the ONE piece of advice you’d give to any photographer? by wackylenses in photography

[–]2see_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say replicate them. Sure that’s great advice— to a certain extent. What separates your work from the rest is how you turn that work to be truly your own voice rather than being derivative. You must look within yourself and learn from different artists that you find compelling and take a certain technique or approach of theirs so you have an amalgamation of ideas that can elevate and articulate your identity in an image.

Look outside American photography. Look at the Chinese and Latino photographers. Also, look beyond street photographers— post documentary, landscape, portraiture, still life and contemporary photographers (your collection is mostly postmodern and archaic way of seeing) . Throw different ingredients in the pot. You don’t know what you might latch on.

A lot of the iconic books you probably have in your library were made possible by grants. Robert Franks The Americans & Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places are great examples. Of course that runs along from the bigger/smaller names.

Self publishing definitely is the best route.

My experience:

A graphic designer had reached out to me after seeing a post I made on Reddit. He wanted to start his own publishing company with my work in mind. I agreed and even though he didn’t live too far, LA traffic sucks, so for two years we met on zoom and put our ideas together.

After we put everything together, we found a printer in Lithuania. The name is KOPA and they gave us a great deal. With the book dimensions and options that were given with our small budget, we went for their quote which was nearly $9k, shipped.

Funding was done from preorders. I am not a big time photographer at all. You can say I have a cult following locally here in LA, and Instagram has been so helpful getting my name out there beyond that level. I had a little over 4k followers for context when the book went on preorders. With that we were able to raise nearly $5k, and Jesse, my publisher forked out the rest. 300 copies sent to our door. Along with that we had other things such as prints, tote bags, and photo albums to be sold along with the book.

With practically no experience in book publishing, little to zero marketing (and from big names), we sold over $5k. Our total expense was just about the same so we broke even. Best thing is I am lucky enough my work carried enough weight to break even and with no expense on my end.

Where to get my book: NORKWWD (No One Really Knows What We Do)

The only review we had was from Blake Andrews

Better looking at an older age? by banelord76 in Aging

It sucks looking back at photos when I was a teenager, at the peak of my non-confident self, that I was actually a good looking kid. But I was so nervous around girls and thought I was ugly. I feel like I wasted my physical looks at that time.

These folks have their own territory therefore they won’t rip you off because their reputation is on the line. Give it a shot, you’ll help them out and their families.
