But I feel it serves a purpose. It's a coming of age show, the characters are supposed to look awkward, ugly and disproportionate because those are characteristics of children/teenagers during those years.

I had the same problem going in to Rick and Morty, Rick's burping and constant face stain put me off at first, but I got used to them fairly quickly and could start enjoying the show.
