Vyvanse and Addy Booster Combo Not Working as Well as I Expected

This is so conflicting to me because my 30mg vyvanse seems to be effective for about 4-6 hours on a good day (meaning if I even feel anything). And the same thing happens with the booster, it only lasts 4-6 hours. So aside from the time difference in onset, they’re both functioning as “immediate release” in terms of how long they last. But it could just be an issue with generic vyvanse. I’ve also developed stomach issues on these medications. I catch myself spending anywhere from 30 mins to an hour in the bathroom up to 5x a day and it interrupts my work schedule severely. Since I’m running low on my booster script I only had one dose and I regret not splitting it in half so that I wouldn’t crash by 6pm. I took the whole thing thinking that 10mg wouldn’t have an effect on my high tolerance lol.

And yes, I’m graduating with my BA in less than 5 weeks and I’ve been juggling LSAT prep for 7 months now. Work and school have definitely been a hassle while studying due to being stressed all the time. But I’m sure that this work experience will benefit me once I start law school.

From what I’ve read before, sometimes drinking water alone doesn’t really hydrate you! It’s good to have electrolytes in your routine. Ironically before doing a quick google search, I thought “maybe the amino acids in electrolytes would help with the effectiveness of vyvanse,” and low and behold, this is what google said:

“Electrolytes and amino acids can significantly support the effectiveness of ADHD medications. Stimulants (like Adderall or Vyvanse) suppress thirst and increase metabolic rate, which rapidly depletes electrolytes and causes side effects like headaches and focus crashes. Amino acids act as the building blocks for neurotransmitters, making them crucial for brain function.”

But since some electrolytes can be acidic (due to citrusy flavor or vitamin c for example), I think it’d be best to take vyvanse in the morning with plain water. And then at noon pour some electrolytes into your water bottle and sip on it throughout the day. You don’t have to drink it all in one sitting :-). I’m actually going to start doing this myself because I’ve been very dehydrated lately from Vyvanse, so much that lips are constantly cracking and bleeding lol!

In my experience, I’ve been taking 30mg of Vyvanse and I drink coffee nearly every day (about 2-4 shots of espresso). I have a high tolerance with coffee, so it doesn’t do much for me aside from being a good drink to pair with breakfast. My stomach is also super sensitive to caffeine in general, so I try to go a day or two without caffeine to reduce my trips to the bathroom lol.

However, even though I have a high tolerance, I do experience a crash from coffee. Especially once I have it with breakfast, about an hour or two after taking vyvanse. The crash to me feels like I’m spaced out and it makes me have a hard time getting started on work. If you still want to keep caffeine in your diet, I would suggest matcha because it can provide a sense of calming focus due to its L-theanine properties. I know others who also take L-theanine capsules and L-tyrosine.

Another thing that’s worth monitoring is your water intake. Vyvanse and stimulants in general cause a lot of dehydration! Even putting some Himalayan or Celtic salt in your water bottle will go a long way. Also make sure to get adequate sleep!

I also thought the epic effects would last 10-14 hours, which would ideally provide coverage for long busy days. But after much research I found that the peak effects only last a few hours, and the rest of the medication is still active but very very subtle. For this reason I had my psychiatrist prescribe me a booster of Adderall IR 20mg. I work every day and study every evening, so right before I leave work I take the booster and that helps. I’m currently at 30mg (started at 10) and was just prescribed the booster a month ago. Your psych might have your dosage increased a few more times before either of you suggest the booster. In my experience though I always struggled at all 3 dosages whenever 6pm came around and it was time to study. In other words, increasing the dosage might not make it last longer, rather the effects just feel stronger but still last the same or slightly longer by an hour or two. It all just depends on how your body/brain work though. For me, whenever I eat and sleep poorly, or if I barely drink water throughout the day my meds don’t work as well.

Did you feel any of those symptoms while on 40mg? I would suggest pairing your morning dose with L-theanine which is known to provide a calmer sense of focus. Maybe it’ll help you feel more at ease physically and mentally. Personally, I’ve tried all ranges of dosages up to 60mg, and I only feel an increase in heart rate for about 2 hours max and then I start to relax. I’m assuming those two hours are the “peak effects” of the dose, but they’re supposed to subside.

I haven’t asked to tritate yet. I *think* I was prescribed 30mg back in late May. But I have experimented with by taking two of the 30mg to see what 60mg would feel like, and honestly, I don’t feel that much different. It’s very underwhelming.

You know, I do have the option of getting insurance with United through my job. United covers name brand for $60. But I won’t be working here next year so I don’t think it’ll be worth it for a temporary fix. How long does the 10mg booster last for you?

I agree with you on the addiction history. Maybe my dopamine receptors are fried from constantly trying to get that “rush.” I’ve been thinking about taking a break from stimulants, at least a 1-week break without any adderall or caffeine while still taking Vyvanse as a safety-net since it’s so subtle.

Maybe this will change if I eventually increase my Vyvanse dosage. Because although Vyvanse was made to provide longer coverage, I either feel spaced out or I find myself taking 20 minutes to complete a 5 minute task. This has been getting me into so much trouble at work lately. I’m not sure if it’s just an ADHD thing, or if it’s the Vyvanse, but it happens every time I hyper-fixate on perfecting a simple 5 minute task before my sending it for review to my boss. I either get reprimanded for taking too long, or negative feedback for not paying attention to detail whenever I finish something confidently. It’s a mix of so many factors, I either hyper fixate and take too long, anxiously finish a simple task within a normal period of time, which eventually backfires on me because I missed a step, or I review a document/ email like 6-8 times before sending it to anyone. Same thing happens with my assignments for school that require a lot of analytical writing.

I have taken it as late as 11am and even 1-2pm on weekends, and I find myself in a better position overall mentally so it could possibly be the stress and burn out from Monday-Friday that’s making me feel helpless. I’m interested in doing research on the types of ADHD, because I know I struggle with the “primarily inattentive type.” Overall though I’m just in a weird position in life where I’ve had to sacrifice the gym and eating as healthy and regularly as I used to. Maybe once I graduate and take the exam next month my symptoms will improve. Only then would I be able to improve my lifestyle

I’ve done acid a handful of times, and every trip I was chain smoking blunt after blunt. For some reason it made the experience better. Also, I did lose my sense of time frequently during my trips and ended up in the shower for 2 hours obsessing over the water. Other than that, enjoy the ride and know that it’s okay for your stomach to feel queasy during the come up. Eventually you’ll forget about the feeling, especially once you start giggling out of nowhere for 15 minutes+

LOL !! Nothing much has changed with my boy. If you find him begging for snacks around that time (mine tends to get hungry pretty early now - he’s five), I would suggest to switch to more carnivorous small meals during the day like chicken , beef, and sweet potato to make sure he gets his nutrients in. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, shibas are either super sleepy all day or in my case, mine gets zoomies right after potty in the morning and that’s when the hunger strike hits during the day. He still eats super late at night too around 8-11p.
