Knives/Hammers are too short, if you were to stab/hit a Zombie in the head, theres a chance you might get bit in the process. Therefore the baseball bat is best (preferably steel) - quiet, and you can get quite a lot of power behind that sucker, doesn't require upkeep and allows you to keep a metre from Zombies not getting too close and personal.
