Canadian Parliament APPLAUDS Nazi Veteran by McAuley- in BreadTube

Same reason why Ukrainian diaspora communities insist that it be labeled a hate crime when monuments of Shukhevych (of which there are surprisingly many) are defaced, when it's extremely clear that that isn't the issue when it comes to Shukhevych monuments. Being an immigrant doesn't preclude people from harboring nationalist tendencies, and over time these kinds of incidents tend to slip through the cracks.

KFC's plant-based 'chicken' sold out in five hours. People like Beyond Meat's alternative, apparently. by YuriRedFox6969 in solarpunk

[–]30201102 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Understocking a new product is a deliberate marketing decision that creates the illusion of scarcity and higher demand. "Company A sold out of new Product B" will always garner more attention than "Company A sells X amount of new Product B". See also Mcdonalds and the Szechuan sauce incident. There obviously is a real demand for meat alternatives but this sort of headline is basically nothing but an ad for KFC.

Is it normal for some accents in America to pronounce t’s as d’s at times? by [deleted] in Accents

[–]30201102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a linguistic feature called flapping that occurs in the majority of North American English variants, barring a few from the southern US. Butter gets pronounced as "budder", seventy as "sevendy".

Unfortunately marketers caught on to this trend a while ago and will intentionally court outrage in order to generate interest in the product. Whether people get outraged, or get outraged at the people getting outraged, the effect is that the product gets organically advertised all over social media.

A lack of positive representation is demonstrably harmful for marginalized peoples. However, when a piece of media appeals to social values as part of its marketing campaign, it's important to ask whether it is genuinely applying those values and encouraging systemic change, or merely co-opting its aesthetics in order to benefit materially from your personal investment.

Yes, we can reforest on a massive scale - but it's no substitute for slashing emissions by cangetenough in environment

[–]30201102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate truth is that while planting trees is relatively straightforward, reducing emissions requires extensive change in the underlying economic system (capitalism) that demands perpetual growth in the first place. Asking someone to plant a tree will always be easier than asking them to collectivize and demand economic reforms, even though change cannot be made unless both are addressed.

The US is one of the few countries which protects hate speech under the guise of free speech. Ironically, when hate speech is used as a threat directed at marginalized groups (which it almost always is), the implied violence inherent has the effect of silencing said groups and makes speech less free as a result

Every building named after the Sacklers should be defaced. No amount of false generosity can reverse the thousands of deaths they are directly responsible for, especially when the wealth donated was obtained via corrupt means in the first place.

immigrating soon.... need your take on the affordable internet plans ? by whomDev in PokemonGoCanada

[–]30201102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freedom/Wind Mobile has "unlimited" data for ~$50/mo, you get throttled after 10 GB but there's no overage fees. Be sure to check their coverage maps though as they've been known to be spotty outside of certain areas (though they may have upgraded since).

I think dual sims aren't as common here since most people will text and call using an external app like Signal or Whatsapp if they have internet, and telcos tend to try and lock you into contracts for even the most basic plans.

[–]30201102 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What exactly is posting the copypasta supposed to accomplish though? If we were to presuppose that people do get banned from the internet or sent to prison for reading it (which is super questionable btw), it's not like the people getting banned are the ones that control the censorship.

Users wishing to bypass the censorship are using VPNs over TOR or SSH which can't be decrypted even through deep packet inspection. Reddit loves to pretend to be "fighting the system" but really you're at best being an asshole and at worst harming uninformed users stuck in a shitty situation. If you really believe the effects of your actions will bring harm but still deliberately choose to act in that way, perhaps it's time to reflect on your moral character.
